Long term effects
I did okay on metoprolol for about a year. My problem was anxiety and insomnia. It got so bad I felt like pulling my hair out of my head. The doctor took me off and gave me some hyrocxyzine hydrochloride to help me sleep and I am fine. In fact some nights no meds are needed. My husband is on metoprolol now for blood pressure due to stents, so I will update if he has any side effects.
HI, I was prescribed Metoprolol together with other BP meds when I was first diagnosed with paroxysmal AF nearly 3 years ago.. However, I found I did not tolerate even the smallest dose well - it just knocked me out completely and I had no energy at all plus it did nothing to lessen the frequency of my AF episodes. I eventually stopped taking it on a regular basis and now use it as pill in the pocket and take only when I feel an episode coming on. However, dose is so small not sure it actually has any effect. I have never experienced any other side effects but the dose was very small. Sorry I can't help further but hope you get to the bottom of it.
Thirty years is a long time to be on the same blood pressure pill, especially since there are quite a few other classes. I was prescribed metoprolol when I was first diagnosed with arrhythmia. I did not last three days on it let alone thirty years. I believe I read on this site that it is contraindicated for vegal AF.
Certainly discuss this drug with your leg specialist in December. And, after 30 years, you have the right to try another blood pressure drug. At least, trying another blood pressure drug would be a check if it is metoprolol causing the problem.
Thankyou for your reply. I should clarify that I started this drug for high blood pressure...an added and big benefit is that it blocks the terrible migraines I had before starting it. I’m hesitant to go off it for that reason. With Afib development 3 yrs ago they changed my daily dose to morning and night(50 mg to 25 am and pm) Afib is mostly under control. Worth a try to change drug just don’t want migraines back.
I couldn't tolerate even 25 mg. Since, it was just 3 years ago, I am surprised your team didn't add a rhythm control drug, rather than doubling your beta blocker. I am not an MD, so what I say is only from my experience, and mounds of research , of course.
Definitely talk to your medical team if there is not an alternate combo treatment (more than one pill at lower dose) that would address both blood pressure and arrhythmia, with the emphasis on not having headaches. You might even want a chat with your pharmacist who is more informed about drugs than the doctors.
In the meantime, you might want to do some of your own research to address migraine such as:
rxlist.com/migraine_medicat...
Be careful how you read the list such as NSAIDS are not for arrhythmia.
From a different site, you might want to read about metoprolol dosage.
rxlist.com/migraine_medicat...
And its side effects:
drugs.com/sfx/metoprolol-si...
So, when you go for your nerve leg testing, you will have some ammunition ( knowledge) to follow your diagnosis relative to whether metoprolol plays a part.
Happy reading and good luck for a good diagnosis.
I was on Bisoprolol and Flecainide for over twenty years before being able to give them both up following ablation 5 years ago. I had, and still have, although to a lesser extent, dead areas on my heels. This was caused by one or the other so very glad to give them up. Oddly enough the high blood pressure I was taking the Bisoprolol for, disappeared with the ablation.

I had high BP before the AF, it was probably a contributory factor. Originally, on Metaprolol then Bisoprolol altogether about 35 years. I am very pleased that my BP is now normal without drugs.
