Well said CD!

I am old fashioned and like to write with sentences, paragraphs complete with appropriate punctuation. Nowadays in this digital world it seems it's not allowed. I fear these features of written English will also soon disappear.

John

Maybe it depends on devices and apps. Sometimes when you use phones or ipads, with some apps especially, when you hit return to create a paragraph, instead of inserting a new line what happens is it terminates and sends the message/post/whatever, which is so annoying.

So I'm just guessing many people avoid this problem by not creating paragraphs!!!

Hi CDreamer

I agree, it's so much easier to read a post if paragraphs are used. However, if people don't know how to structure them, then that's fine with me and I'll do my best to plough through what they've written.

Would you prefer those people, who may not know how to present what they're commenting on in perfect paragraphs, not to write here? After all, there's a chance that English may not be their first language. They could also have learning difficulties.

I remember poor Baraba whose translations from his native language to English appeared so direct, he was quickly jumped on, hammered down and ended up leaving the forum.

Let's just welcome everyone, however they present their posts, and not be too critical.

Ah, all my paragraph spacing disappeared when I posted the above response, think it's the system used here. Must admit I haven't noticed that before.

I am often in danger of losing what I have written in an email although i do pull out all the stops if my e mail is a formal one .Whenever i can i ignore paras. etc. and I resort to informality for the sake of retaining the text.

What a lovely response Jeanjeannie, and your paragraphs were all there on my tablet. R.

Jean - I’m not critical of the posters - it’s a comment on the app - I wrote 2 posts in paras but when I posted the para spacing disappeared!

Sorry CD. I got that wrong. I didn't think the way I read it sounded like you. Forgive me. x

Well said Jean. Paragraphs all showing. Think it's an age thing as most young folk would not notice

Hidden is right. Modern devices encourage poor visual communications, incomprehensible spelling and bad layout. I would despair if I had to attempt to teach English grammar nowadays - or perhaps it isn’t taught any more? 😩

I find it very difficult to read anything which isn’t broken into sensible paragraphing but . . . there is one sensationalist newspaper which uses a new paragraph for every sentence which is equally difficult to wade through.

It is taught in England definetly. Had a big comeback in the mid 20s. My interest in teaching adults came about because the children's parents simply could not help them with homework or projects .

I changed from teaching in schools to Family Learning in the community.

Grammar, spelling and punctuation were the priority, a big change from the focus on 'creative writing' approach.

However ,as I left ,there was a lot of discussion going on about the influence of digital text and phone texting ,not in a good way,on the above.

Lucky to get paragraphs.

Some posts are one long sentence.

Going now.

🤣good duck Bob.

I can’t read long posts or continuous text without double spacing as my eyes blur. Written with para spacing on smart phone as a test.

Which shows on my device so it’s not modern devices!

Strange as when my post went on there were no spaces but after a trip to Launceston and back they have appeared.

Similar experiences- So what IS going on? Weird or have we a HU para gremlin who eats para spaces & then regurgitates them.....

This system removes extra lines. My post above is actually two paragraphs but may look like one depending on your screen size etc. The additional line I put in to make certain it appeared as two separate paragraphs was taken out when it was posted.

All the posts above, had no gaps between paras on my computer when viewed earlier today, including the one I made. Using the same browser, same computer, same sizing, each para now (a few hours later) has a definite gap after it.

Ah yes it’s much easier to read writing with paragraphs it’s like a take of breath before the next subject.

I’ve a feeling on this site I may have or have not. I’m a terrible typist and with this nutty spell checker I end up with all srts of wrong words.

Now I’m goung to check CD!

Grin!

Perhaps . . .

. . . leaving a blank line . . .

. . . would help ?

jeanjeannie50 profile image

That's exactly what we've done and spaced out our paragraphs, but when submitted they'd disappeared.

Looks like they've all returned now.

The discussion is on the behaviour of the app, not the posters - I want to know why it leaves the para spaces sometimes and then they disappear after posting?

in reply to Jaws66

Extra blank lines to force a big gap get taken out. I will put 2 additional spares lines between each of the following as a test...

test

test

test

The addition lines have disappeared.

Yet I see them.
