An afib story
Well worth reading. Thank you.
Thank you for your very detailed post. I cycle similar weekly distances and was diagnosed with Atrial Flutter in 2012; I suffered multiple episodes and had 4 ablations in the end.
My last one was April 2015. I moved house and changed job roles, now live near the beach on the south coast in the UK, and everything was great until 01/01/2020 when I went into another tachycardic rhythm which I thought was a flutter to being diagnosed with AFib.
I found your article really interesting that AFib can also be treated with the ablation technique and has given me some hope. My symptoms are similar to your friends with stimulants and exercise being the trigger. To the point where I have now given up alcohol and caffeine.
I’ve had two further AFib episodes whilst out cycling and both have self resolved within 24hours.
I also have an underlying blood condition called Essential Thrombocythemia and have to take 75mg of aspirin daily.
My cardiologist has recommended the pill in the pocket whilst we monitor.
I think what I am most frustrated about now with AFib compared to Atrial Flutter is that the trigger is completely random. For example I was cycling a few weeks ago and had stopped for some food for about 35 mins and the continued the ride and went into AFib. I was the fine by the next day and did other rides with out any problems; then about 2 weeks ago I went for another ride and went in to AFib even though I wasn’t pushing particularly hard again self sorted within 24hours.
So at the moment ever ride I live in slight fear that I’m going to go into AFib.
I desperately don’t want to give up cycling (Yet) as with my other condition at some point over the next decade or so that will most likely happen.
I’m 44 years old and not ready to hand the towel in yet!!
Great to hear I am just waiting on my 1st ablation. Good to read your story.
This is not my story. I jut thought it was a good read.
