Hi Ramblingross. It has often crossed my mind from the regularity that it is mentioned that Rivaroxaban seems to be the only anticoagulant. To my recall it crops up on this forum quite often. I think i recall a few posts over the past couple of days.

I’m on Rivaroxiban (and I’ve been on Pradaxa and Apixiban but had side effects with them). My only side effect of Rivaroxiban is some hair loss. Every time I wash or brush my hair some comes out. Thankfully I had very thick hair to start with.

Plenty of mentions - just put in the search box to see previous posts.

It is may not be as popular as others as It has to be taken with a substantial meal which includes some fat and protein - so taking with cereal and toast in the morning won’t cut it. If Rivaroxaban is not absorbed properly then it can cause some problems and may not be metabolised and then of course the efficacy as an anti-coagulant will be compromised. The advantage of course is that only needs to be taken once daily.

Hiya..no one has told me to take it with a meal unfortunately....l have been taking it around 10 pm....thank you for your reply and I'm now going to look into this....so important meds are taken at proper times....

It is in the leaflet but it’s not nearly as prominent as it should be. A friend of mine had liver dysfunction because she was taking with breakfast - well what she called breakfast which was a tablespoon of kefir as she was on a Keto diet. Just ensure you take with a reasonable substantial meal.

Best wishes

Rivaroxaban is good although I have been changed to Apixaban as I only have one working kidney and the other one was having a little bleed. It wasn't necessarily the Rivaroxaban as that is a good anti-coagulant and only has to be taken once a day with the evening meal containing a little fat, ie if you do your mashed potatoes with milk and butter that is OK. Good luck and try not to worry

Thank you...your reply has put my mind at rest...

Hello, I have been asked to repeat a post I added last year about this subject, which was discussed during 2017 patients day conference.

"Rivaroxaban should be taken with some food, a biscuit is good enough, does not need to be a three course meal as Pfizer would have you believe. It should be taken about the same time each day

Apixaban is twice daily and does not need to be taken with food, but should be taken 12hours apart

Edoxaban is once a day and does not need to be taken with food. However if you have very good renal function (uncommon in the AF population) then you may not be able to have it. It should be taken about the same time each day

Despite what the various companies say, this is a family of Xa inhibitors and they have these minor differences but are essentially as good as each other."

I hope that this helps.

Kind regards

Rachel - AF Association Patient Services Coordinator

HI Rachel,

What was the topic of the 2017 patients day conference and what type of medic provided the advice on the amount of food?

I've been in touch with Bayer medical information team regarding Xaltero (Rivaroxaban) who won't state anything other than is on the practitioners or patients information leaflet.

Thanks

Angie

I am on Rivaroxaban for 5 years and take it with my evening meal. I do not think a biscuit is sufficient to take it with I am surprised that Rachel has stated this. Of course it does not have to be a three course meal - but best taken with a decent meal, if you have your main meal at lunchtime then take it then. I have always been told to take it with a meal not a snack.
