I had never heard of this (free) App but have now downloaded it to my iphone. You just pick your food preference (less sugar, less salt, healthy eating), scan the barcode of any processed item and it will give you alternatives. I don't buy much in the way of processed food, but do buy some sauces and certain mixes, and reading this month's Which? I was shocked to see Sacla Pesto has 3.3g salt per 100g as opposed to Morrisons pesto at 0.86 per 100g. Food for thought!

I makes me sooooo mad about the amount of salt in food. Just 1g of salt will give me af. I think it is because it screws up the way magnesium works in the body. There is no need for any salt to be added to any food except its a cheap preservative. I think it would be a good idea to enforce a reduction of salt in all food and add magnesium instead which seems to why most of us get af due to a lack of it. It is especially evident as I have af kicking off now for eating ham in a roll for lunch. Rant over.

I totally agree - but I also think salt is added to give food taste and I would quite happily buy totally bland offerings and choose my own spices and herbs to add. Hope you are feeling better.

Now that is useful. It’s sugar and salt with me. I

spend so long squinting at labels, it takes me hours to shop. An app to do it for me will be marvellous.

I got into the mood last night and was scanning everything in the cupboard. I was horrified at the amount of fat and salt in oatcakes - one of my favourites. My husband travels off-road on his motorbike for long periods and carries cup-a-soup to heat on his little stove - one sachet is over 1/4 of the recommended daily limit!
