Generally speaking unless done within 24 hours maybe 48 at a push of AF starting you would need to be anticoagulated for quiet some time before DCCV (cardioversion) would be offered. The only alternative would be to do it preceded by a trans- oesophageal echocardiogram (TOE) to check that there are no clots within the heart which may be ejected by the shock and cause a stroke.

Thanks BobD,I have been coagulation for 4 weeks but overseas at the moment, was meaning more about waiting to see consultant & waiting for the procedure, thanks for the quick reply.

I suspect nothing will happen very quickly on the NHS. I have a friend who lives in Hereford and he had to wait 3 months to have a CV. The only thing I can suggest is that you see a cardiologist privately and assuming he agrees that a CV is the right thing to do, hope that he can arrange for you to go on the NHS CV list in the area of your choice. It might be a good idea to make sure his secretary is aware of what you are trying to achieve so that she can establish if it possible before you lay out cash for a private appointment.

I saw a private consultant who got me treated on the NHS. Faster than going the GP route.
