Well known link - my EP sent me for a sleep study and I am now treated with CPAP which has helped a lot.

Also, excess weight is known to cause/increase snoring, and as excess weight is said to add to our AF burden, perhaps the two are chicken and egg?

AF may be caused by sleep apnea. One of the symptoms of sleep apnea is snoring. So, yes, there may be a relationship between AF and snoring - but it probably isn't a causal relationship more of a coincidental relationship, if you see what I mean.

Having moved from the UK and NHS to the USA it is interesting to hear from medics here that there is most likely a causal relationship with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and AF. As the body is starved of oxygen the heart beats more rapidly to increase the dwindling supply. When this happens on a regular basis for months or years, then it can become AF. Snoring is only the symptom of what might be sleep apnoea. But as one who has had both OSA--and I am not overweight or a smoker as the NHS criteria state--and AF, since getting a CPAP I have not been bothered with either. The problem for the NHS is that if they accept research on the Continent and in the US then they will have to supply a lot of people with CPAP machines and they don't want to pay for that. But I would rather buy one and retain my health than wait for the NHS to pull the proverbial digit out.

I live in the states and before sleep apnea dx or AF dx I remember that I would wake up suddenly from a sound sleep and jump out of bed quickly to 'catch my breath'. This was in 2011. I mentioned this casually to a doctor on a visit for something completely unrelated. He said "Sleep Study'" The first night with my C-PAP machine I slept better than I had in years. I bring my own machine to the hospital and guard it with my life. The ones in the hospital don't always fit; they have different kinds and not all (to me) are equally effective. Also, there are so many patients who use them, once there wasn't one available. Had to sleep almost sitting up all night til I could have mine brought from home next morn. For me, C-PAPs are a God-send.

Used to-like a freight train, I've been told. But don't anymore thanks to sleep study (2011) and C-PAP machine. I use it religiously-even for a short 'snooze'.
