If you are looking for search option on a mobile device , touch the profile icon (pink smiley) on the top right.

I have tried that, found the search option, typed in a word, but there is nothing on the page to press to carry out a search, apart from the search area it is blank

Just press "enter" (right arrow) on your keyboard
