Apixaban allergy reactions

Was put on apixaban 5 mgm twice a day post TIA mid March; OK at first but developed hives with much scratching. As older than 80, got GP to reduce dosage to 2.5 mgm but ellergies increased - muscle pains in legs and arms, joint pains shoulders and knees, swollen feet, bloated abdomen, and very, very tired. Reduced dosage to 1.25 mgm by cutting tablets, still had bad allergic reaction; yesterday medico at stroke review changed medication to dabigatran 110 mgm. I hope this works abit more happily within me.

Hi Deejay :-) I wonder why it took so long for you to develop a reaction.

I am on Apixaban and have had no problems so far.

Will you let us know how you get on with the dabigatran please, it would be useful to know.

I do hope things improve for you soon.

Hi doodle68, actually the allergy reaction set in fairly quickly, but I thought it was psoriasis and treated it as such. However, when I began getting pain in my legs, and my walking ws impaired, I began taking an anti-histamine as well. AS this did not settle, even with the 1.25 mgm dosage of apixaban, I got details for the stroke review, and it was there that the definite diagnosis of an allergic reaction was made and the medication switched to dabigatran.

I will keep you posted. Thanks for your kind words.

yep, i had all those symptoms when I was on it, no better on dabigitran, eventually put on edoxaban which I tolerate much better.

Took a while to work it out because I was on Amiodorone at the time too
