Riveroxoban not my cup of tea it seems.....

Hi all - I began taking verapamil last week and it has given fairly instant relief if not total cessation of Afib''s worst effects.

A couple of days latter I added one dose daily of riveroxoban and felt dreadful. Splitting headache which no amount of paracetamol would clear, foggy, tired, sore limbs...euch.

So decided last night not to take it and today feel completely fine. It would have left my system overnight. Headache totally gone and that's a relief as it lasted 3 days without end.

I am seeing GP next week and will ask for a change of NOAC. I am a score 1 stroke risk as a 49 yo female with no other risk factors so I am happy to wait the 10 days or so.

It is interesting to me that the thing I was expecting to be awful, the HR stuff, feels fibe and the NOAC has been the nasty one.

Question though - do NOACs all do roughly the same thing in the same way so the side affects are similar or are there big differences?

Thanks to all for your many helpful replies to my usually naive posts to date. I hate that AF is my present and future but you are all a great help.

Don't worry about asking questions please. We all have to learn about this mongrel called AF.

I think that whilst NOACs tend to work on different parts of the clotting process than Vit K antagonists like Warfarin, Rivaroxaban works in a slightly different way to the others. I could be wrong but in any case each drug has different side effects so you still have three more plus Warfarin to try. Glad the verapamil is helping.

Sorry to hear that. I was the same on Rivaroxaban, although it took 3 months to work out what was causing me to feel so ill as I was on so many other meds that have the same possible side effects,

I was switched to Apixaban, and that was worse than the Rivaroxaban for me.

Just waiting to hear what I'm going to be playing with next!

I am dithering about asking to change. I am pretty sure Rivaroxaban gives me mild diarrhoea, but that is slightly to my advantage as it means I have no chance of getting constipated no matter how little fibre I eat which is good for my diverticular disease, and has the advantage of being taken once a day, but on the other hand I am feeling a bit weak......

But with the diarrhoea you will lose some magnesium and potassium, which are essential electrolytes, so it won't help the AF.

According to my Cardiologist Apixaban appears to be the best of the NOAC`s at the moment! I have taken it for 14 months now,no problems!
