New anti coagulant

just been to my first anti coagulant appointment and been prescribed apixaban not what i was expecting which was warfarin so a bit surprised wondered if anyone else was on it?

Wow, result!! I take dabigatran but had a heck of a fight to get it. 5 weeks on warfarin at 1.4 levels. I think apixaban is the latest addition to the noac's. Hope it works for you, haven't read any negative responses on this sight.

I take dabigatran also and I have to say I feel great. I had surgery last August and I was the first person that the surgeon had come across that takes one of the new coagulants. She was amazed at the results. Yes I had to fight for it also as it is expensive compared to Warfarin, but in my eyes well worth it.

I have been taking apixaban since January and have had no problems with it at all.

Incidentally, I injured my face slightly last month, which caused a nosebleed (panic!!) but I followed normal procedure and held my nose for 10 minutes and worried - but the bleeding stopped within the 10 minutes and everything healed up well.

That's really helpful. I feel like a bit of a pioneer on the new drugs. Don't think there is anyone else at my surgery being prescribed. Although I have researched them extensively, the issue of a bleed is still a bit of a mystery.

have been on Pradaxa for 2 years and its great no more use for my inr machine

I have been on it since last July. My doctor says it is the best of the new drugs.

I have been on it since October, always wonder if it's really working, lol, as I actually bruise less now and have cut myself a few times with no problem in stopping bleed....

But I have had no ill side effects

sounds good then, supposed to fit better with lifestyle, I certainly didnt fancy the idea of regular clinic appointments and from the clinic i saw yesterday that is deffinately a blessing!!!

I like the new drug too. Taken a few weeks to settle in, turned the corner last Monday and feel pretty awesome xx

My cardio/EP both recommended "Apixaban" ( I travel abroad a abroad for weeks at a time) but the local CCG's refused on grounds of cost. So, I have to pay for this myself but I am determined to appeal this to the bitter end! Please keep in touch with progress.

The NA-1 drug will help buy the patient time until they can get the tPA drug which busts up blood clots and minimizes the impact of the stroke. This tPA drug cannot be used if the stroke is a hemorrhagic stroke or if the patient is on blood thinners.

I've been on 300mg Aspirin for two years and of course it's now announced it's been no use to me! Went to GP on Thurs determined to change to Apixaban but she said far too expensive and warfarin was what they prescribed. I said I'd email my consultant to ask for their opinion. Result!! My GP phoned the next day to say she was prescribing the new drug and made an appointment for me to see her to discuss the medication. So, don't be put off by cost conscious GP's, put up a polite fight and see what happens! Good luck.
