Hi - I have been taking 200mg Amiodarone daily for just over a year. I absolutely hate it!! Unfortunately because I can't take beta blockers (they make my heart rate drop dangerously low) I have no choice but to stay on it. I had an ablation last June and am now awaiting a second cardioversion mid March, if that is successful I may eventually be able to stop taking it. I must say that I know someone who was on Amiodarone for 10yrs without any side effects, but me - no, I want to be off it!! I have heard about another drug called something like Dronedorone. I'm sure someone on this forum will be able to advise you, but you are not alone with your worry.

Hi. Thank you for your reply most helpful. My Cardioversion lasted just two days with a blue light A& E trip with pulse rate 270 per minute..I have to say that Amoidarone certainly and Bisoporol 2.5 mg has worked and brought the pulse rate and bloodpressure down after 5 nights in hospital...but the side effects are all too much. plus regular blood tests as it can effect your liver, kidney and the thyroid...plus it has affected my eye sight etc etc. and you should have a regular chest XRAY. I have to go to the Cardio Specialist later this month. So will have to talk to him and maybe will be able to take another drug like Dronedorone

Hi

I was on Amiodarone for 6 years and it worked well. I had to stop because it caused deposits in my eyes that worried my opthalmic surgeon. However this reverses when you stop so it's not a reason to worry.

I was switched to Dronedarone which I was told was the only alternative drug, but it did'nt work for me and I lapsed back into AF. There is also a warning about Dronedarone - if it works it's OK but if you still get AF episodes then you need to come off it.

Amiodarone doesn't seem to be a long term solution but works as a temporary solution if you plan to have an ablation

Do you get any side effects?

I've been on Amiodarone for 3 mths now...the side effects are dreadful, I have insomnia & nightmares, im irritable, restless & so tired its untrue. My GP agreed yesterday that it isnt suiting me which im very pleased about so just waiting for the ok to stop it from cardiologist. This was the first drug of this type they have put me on...seems a bit extreme. I do feel i should have been given more information about the toxicity of it when it was prescribed.

I came off amiodarone because of side affects. I am on dronedarone but tested regularly. I have now been diagnosed because of my palpitations with drug induced over active thyroid. This is from the amiodarone.
