Anyone who needs extra help for whatever reason is entitled to claim DLA that was, but now changed to PIP earlier this year. There are however fears that under the new system less people will be successful, so worth seeking help and advice from benefitsandwork.co.uk/ who have proved invaluable in helping with my sons claim, all be it for a different illness. Good luck and hope you feel better soon. Liz

The physical and psychological effects are different with each patient as are the degree of symptoms. If you are unable to work you may be able to claim a Employment Support Allowance (contributions or income related). People who get this benefit are placed in to the support group (can't do any work related activity) or the work related activity group for people who can do some work activity. You would be best advised to submit medical evidence with your claim form which indicates which of the descriptors use by the DWP to determine your eligibility apply to your symptoms. Here are some helpful links:

Guidance can also be found disabilityrightsuk.org/esa.htm at the Disability Rights UK fact sheet. The detailed Chapter 41: ESA Conditions of Entilement can be found dwp.gov.uk/docs/vol08.pdf

You can also get help nawra.org.uk/wordpress/word... completing your ESA50 from the National Association of Welfare Rights Advisers (N AWRA) website. The website has a sample copy of the form which explains the questions you'll be asked and gives examples of what you can include when writing your answers. Additionally, you should consider submitting medical evidence. Click leicester.gov.uk/EasySiteWe... to access the Leicester Welfare Rights Service medical template. A useful case study briefing is available from Newcastle Welfare Rights for examples of ESA claims by impairment type by clicking nawra.org.uk/Documents/Edin...

In addition to ESA, you may be able to claim for Personal Independence Payment (replacement for DLA).

thinkability.org.uk has some good sources of information on welfare section and links to online claim resources in the UK.

It's helpful to remember that benefits are awarded in your ability to work or your personal or mobility needs rather than on the name of a condition. So you are best to focus on proving how your condition affects your ability to work or normal day to day activities.

Good luck

Hi Rosailor, from what I understand you have to be claiming the mobility componenant of personal independant payment first to be able to apply for disabled parking badge. I am phoning for my application this week for PIP.

You can ask for a form for the blue badge from your local council. You need to get a dr to confirm you have mobility problems and they have to sign it.

You get it automatically if you get the higher rate of mobility component of DLA or PIP.

You can try for both routes.

clairskyblue and Loquitir

Thanks for your replies Clair and Loquitir, at the moment I make no claims and don't really need to but it would be such a help if I could park nearer shop doors, especially when carrying heavy message bags back to the car,it can take me ages.as I just manage a few steps then have to rest till my heart slows down.

Will ask my doctor for a blue parking badge form.

regards

You get your blue badge application from your local council but your dr has a section they need to sign. Good luck.
