Do you feel at loose ends? Nothing to do? No structure? No money?

Hi. Thank you. The loss of structure and my difficulty in self motivation is paralyzing me. I would also like to have a group who uses adhd medication that I can share experiences with.

The majority of this group uses Rx meds to help with our ADHD. I'm using Focalin xR at 25mg 1X in the morning with breakfast. Yes, it is extended so wears off around 8pm. Helps me stay focused and calm. Excersize around 30 min with meditation daily.

Hello Wildisland,

I’m retired too and being treated for ADHD with medication (Adderall, currently taking 20mg’s). I still have some of the issues you described, but I can read more fluently and comprehend while retaining the material. It is impossible for me to do this without the med. Maybe more importantly I also suffer from depression (taking Burpropion which is known as Wellbutrin) which affects my ability to instill any kind of structure in my daily activities. It was a startling revelation when I was diagnosed with ADHD and Depression as an adult in my ‘50s. So it is really important to find a doctor who can assess you and your health. I still have problems with motivation and structure, but the evaluation gives me a fighting chance to make positive changes in my life. I believe medication is only one aspect of being treated. I have a whole lifetime of self-learned compensation for these conditions some of which have resulted in rather unwholesome habits that have to be unlearned. This is a struggle, but talking to others with similar issues and reading a lot of posts and books helps to gradually start making healthy and positive changes that are meaningful. I retired last August and, while living it, also suffered from what I guess was a lack of structure- even though I had made a plan to structure my day! I briefly saw a telepsych (to get diagnosed, because it was just dawning on me that I had ADHD) and she prescribed Ritalin, but I had to go off it due to high blood pressure. She did mention that both magnesium and fish oil MIGHT help and, because I didn’t want to chase medications, I started them. It may be the placebo effect, but it seemed to help. Just knowing that ADHD may be the problem helped a bit, too. I just try to remember WHY I’m feeling unmotivated and work through, and not feel guilty.
