Hi I know alot of children who have been on risperadone with both good and bad experiences my son has asd ocd and ts he was put on risperadone for his severe tics and it just didn't agree with him it only mildly calmed his tics and with the vile side effects he had like falling asleep at the drop of a hat including school he turned into a zombie couldn't stop eating it just wasn't worth the side effects meds are hit and miss there are so many options and not all of them will suit your son hope you get there soon xxx

I don't know how severe his tics are but I say if he can concentrate in school, stick with mess like guanfacine. Respirdone can have long lasting effects like Tardive Dyskinesia (constant tongue thrusting) that may never go away.

My son was prescribed respiridone when he was 9 for his Tourette's , his tics were quite bad, motor, vocal, Speach , it really helped him, he had more of an appetite and gained half a kilo a week but he was very skinny anyway, he was also tired on the night time and his dose of melatonin was lowered. The dose of respiridone was at first 0.25mg then doubled and then doubled again to 1mg twice a day , he is now on ritalin for ADHD as well. We found it a god send and my son felt better in himself , it didn't stop the tics obviously but calmed them down so much and he is doing sooo much better at school ! Trial and error I'm afraid , he has had other meds that haven't suited him but the ones he's on now are fantastic xxx

My son is med free at the moment his tics are going through a low period he can keep most of them in at school if he does tic whilst there they re usually mild sniffing throat clearing ect but he goes off like a rocket when he comes back into the house we just keep an eye on him and if he feels that his tics get out of control again and he wants to go down the med route again we will and also would try respirdon again as he is older now and may have a differenteeffect im afraid theres no quick solution the best thing you can both do is not get disheartened as it may take several attempts on different meds to find the best suitable for your son x

He has periods where like most where his tics can b really bad with soo many different ones going at the same time to only a handful , he's in the middle ATM and slowly getting worse as his voice is breaking now and he's entering puberty, I was told Tourette's sends u into puberty earlier than usual and tics can be at their worst during this time ! I'm a little nervous as he's 11 now and due to start senior school September , starting his statementing next week but it takes months and months ! Hope ur son gets settles x not much left of school for him x
