I used one all the time initially as a masking device, playing the sound of waves breaking which distracted me from the shrieking tinnitus. After 18 months I no longer need it on a daily basis.

I have filled the house with clocks, all set at different times. There's dinging, bonging and various other noises all the time. The ticking also distracts me from the constant whistling noise.
