Melanoma can appear anywhere on the body, but are most commonly found on the trunk in men and legs in women.
Melanoma can arise from otherwise normal appearing skin (about 70%) or from within a mole or freckle, which starts to grow larger and change in appearance.
There are several different types of melanoma with the most common form being Superficial Spreading Melanoma. To help spot the early signs and symptoms, check your skin thoroughly and regularly (once a month) using the ABCDE screening tool:
‼ A = ASYMMETRY
When one half of the mole does not match or look like the other half of the mole.
‼ B = BORDER
When the borders of the mole are uneven, irregular, ragged or have blurred, undefined edges.
‼ C = COLOUR
When the colour changes or varies throughout. Red, blue and black colourations are particularly serious signs.
‼ D = DIAMETER
When the diameter is greater than 6mm (but please be aware that it could be smaller).
‼ E = EVOLVING
Changes in appearance, size and/or sensation in a new or existing mole is the biggest indicator of a melanoma.
‼ If you spot anything new, unusual or changing - seek immediate advice from your GP. Early detection, diagnosis and treatment, SAVES LIVES.
