HOW YOUR SKIN RESPONDS TO THE SUN CAN HELP DETERMINE YOUR RISK OF SKIN CANCER.

People with Fitzpatrick skin type 1 or 2 are at greatest risk of skin cancer in comparison to other skin types. This is because these paler skin types lack a natural pigment called melanin which our skin produces to protect us from UV exposure, therefore they are more likely to burn, are more susceptible to sun damage and are at greater risk of developing both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. ADVICE: Take extra care to ensure your skin is properly protected from the sun’s harmful rays and check your skin monthly for the early warning signs.

People with Fitzpatrick skin type 3 or 4 have skin that can burn, but can also tan. Whilst the risk of people with these skin types developing skin cancer due to UV exposure is lower than those with skin types 1 and 2, there is still an evident risk if the skin is not protected from cumulative or intense UV exposure. Even if our skin tans easily, it is a sign of damage - it’s our bodies natural defence to the sun’s harmful rays. Damage is cumulative and irreparable which can lead to the development of both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. ADVICE: Avoid tanning, take the necessary precautions to protect your skin from UV radiation and check your skin monthly for the early warning signs.

People with Fitzpatrick skin type 5 or 6 have the lowest risk of developing skin cancer due to UV exposure in comparison to all other skin types. This is because people with these skin types have more melanin to protect them from the sun’s harmful rays. However, it is a common misconception that people with these skin types are immune to sun damage and skin cancer, which is why when it does occur it is often diagnosed at later stages with poor prognosis. ADVICE: All skin types should take appropriate measures to protect their skin from UV damage and check their skin monthly for the early warning signs.
