Hi all ... my name is Callum my mum had the Ivor Lewis operation just under 2 years ago . There was a few complications but she got through them... about 6 months ago my mum has a silent heart attack it was only vomiting no pain was in hospital for a week then let home with medication .... all has been good since . Then on Saturday vomiting started again and we called 111 for obvious reasons it was the same Symptoms as last time so all panicking ... but false alarm they seem to think it’s just a bug .. but on the xrays they said they have found a small hernia they said it’s very common with that operation can someone please tell me if this is true please ??

Hi, Dont worry ! the IL method is very invasive and alot of muscles are cut to gain entry etc so hernias are quite common so you are being told the truth. I had my IL 10 years ago and whilst I now have to be realistic about what I do I live a pretty normal life most of the time :) I have a hernia and unless it causes real problems my advice is leave it be - some may disagree but I think that whilst everything inside me is still OK i want to keep it that way :)

hope this puts your mind at rest a little - Ray

Yes it is true. I had a problem with my digestive system a few years after my Ivor Lewis and the first thing the gastroenterologist said to me was that it could be a small hernia as a result of the operation. In the event, they did a CT scan and I didn't have one.

Hi you sound a very caring son. Try not to worry. I get checked out on my appointments for hernias so yes they do happen. I hope your mum recovers from the bug.

Best Wishes

Debbie

Thanks all for the reply’s ... it turns out it’s not a bug and she hasn’t been toilet for a few days so they think it’s a build up making her sick all the time. She is still in hospital trying to make her go toilet been sick constantly bless her
