I get really bad eczema on my face. What can I use? I've tried E45, Aveeno, hydrocortisone and betnovate. Can anyone suggest something new?

I have psoriasis and was given EPADERM - I found it the best for me to date and you can also use in the shower and bath. A friend with eczema suggested it to me. No smell and not greasy to use!

Hi Chandora,

Because you describe your eczema as 'really bad', you need to see your doctor/dermatologist. Sometimes, medications such as steroid tablets are needed to get severe eczema under control. If your eczema's worse because it's become infected, you will need anti-biotics. Also, keep a daily journal recording the severity of your eczema and your daily activities. It could be that something is actively making your eczema worse, e.g. a lotion, stress or diet. I have a rare inflammatory condition that affects my skin, and keeping a journal really helps me to manage it.

Take Care.

Hi, I have been very impressed by a small company who produce a deep moisturiser made from organic aloe vera. I used it on my 3 yr old daugghter who was itching her skin until it bled. It took 3 weeks to clear and now i only apply it once a month. It has given long term results as opposed to the steroid creams, e45 etc that were prescribed. I was so impressed that i wrote to the company and now promote it locally to nurseries and parents. If anyone is interested i can give you the website or my contact details?

chandora in reply to abigayle93

Hello abigayle93, I didn't buy from the body shop website. I visited the store and the assistant was really helpful. The cream is "aloe vera" which is a natural herb product and it feels nice on your skin. Wash you face in cool/lukewarm water first and then pat gently with a towel and then (while the pores are still open) apply the moisturiser while the skin still feels slightly damp. Good luck my lovely

Hello Val69,

Since I wrote that message, my skin has been a lot better. I use Aveeno cream on my face now. I still get the odd blotch patch but I find that as long as I keep the skin moisturised, my face heals through the day.

Hi to all who replied to me. Thank you so much for your help and advice, best wishes from Chandora

I've had skin reaction on face when weather seasons change (dry red patches) I found the only thing that helped was the aloe vera skin care range from the body shop. I found this very soothing and calming to the skin. I use this all the time now, it seems to be the only cream my skin can tolerate when it is in a highly sensitive state.

try avoid using products with lanolin, this seems to be a major irritant but is found in most moisturisers, which we as sufferers live by.

hi i use cetaphil gentle skin wash and cetaphil moisturiser none of these products have lanolin or fragrance also use epaderm for my lips also aveeno cream for face and body. I have very dry facial skin also rosacea plus allergy to fragrance, and lanolin, nickel.

What worked for me, on my hands, was Evening Primrose Oil applied directly NOT swallowed. See my answer to an Itchy Skin Question for fuller details.

Cut open high dose capsules and squeeze out the oil, rub into the affected area.

Not sure how this might work on the face, leaving it greasy, but it might be OK to try overnight, it soaks in quite quickly as it is an oil.

Betnovate did not work for me but Dermovate did, however I am not too happy using steroid creams on a regular basis.

chandora profile image
chandora

Hi Zurraspa, thank you so much for replying to me. People have been so kind. When I was in the skin hospital, one of the gilrs used to squeeze the oil from her capsules aswell. Like you say it can be greasy but it does the trick!

I have continued to use Aveeno first thing in the morning and I use aloe vera through the day. If it's a really bad day I put the slightest smear of hydrocortisone over my cheeks and I find that has been helping. I've actually discovered that if I use too much hydrocortisone, it makes the redness worse. As long as my skin is kept moisturised all through the day, it does help.

Best wishes to you and thanks again

Like a few others on this site, I have a suspicion that steroids that interfere with the inflammatory process in a negative way, they do take the condition down but do not appear to resolve it, for me at least. We are all a bit different geneticaly, and thus our response to medications vary. A long time back I had a coloured girlfriend who had a pimply area on her face, she grew up in Africa, subject to higher levels of sunshine. In retrospect I think there may have been some effect due to levels of vitamins A and D, plus her genetics (mixed African and Latin) and reduced sunshine in the UK. Just a theory but I will try to look it up on the web.

They relate to Vitamin D. The advice seems to be to get your Vit D levels checked. Also keep an eye on the toxic effects, said to be different depending on wether you take capsules or up the levels through exposure to UV light.

Factors that may affect this are

Location. How much sunlight you normally get

Age Old people spend much time indoors

Season Worse in winter, apparently can be severe in children.

in reply to zurraspa

Thanks for those links, one of the blood tests my dermatologist arranged is for Vitamin D. But I have to take Adcal +D3 for Osteopenia and he knows that, surely my Vitamin D levels should be ok. I eat a fair amount of oily fish too.

Hi All,

URGENT REQUEST:

I'm an Assistant Producer looking for a contributor with Rosacea for Channel 4's Embarrassing Bodies in the UK.

Would you be interested in having it looked at under a microscope by a top Professor on Friday morning (yes, tomorrow!) in London? We would cover all expenses - This segment will not be broadcast - it's just for an investigation to see if it's worth featuring in the programme.

Please do call me asap if you are interested.

Many thanks,

Jacqueline

Hi everyone,

I have a friend who has eczema and he told me about this new product called Dexem repair cream. He says that Dexem repair cream has worked far better than other creams in regards to soothing his itching and irritations while clearing his skin.

So I checked out the Dexem repair cream website and they say the cream is safe to use on the skin of infants, children and adults, not based on harsh chemicals or toxic substances and has no side effects.

This is the website link: dexem.co.uk

If I get any more information I'll let everyone know and if anyone else uses this cream or knows about it please keep us posted.

Thanks.

Very interesting read on the website. Apparently this blocks bacteria on the skin hence reduce or prevents irritation caused by toxins they produced. Plenty of information on the website on how it works and why it works

Simmy profile image
Simmy in reply to samad1302

Yea I also read the same. Another interesting thing I read was that it can work on its own without the combination of other treatments as an all in one solution, which sounds good.

Hi, have you considered that your skin might be addicted to the steroid creams? For some of us, especially the a topics, it only takes a little to get addicted. Look into topical steroid withdrawal, you will find a lot of info online

chandora profile image
chandora

Thank you for kind response Voula. I have tried so hard to stay off the steroid creams but then my skin starts burning so I try just using a tiny smear instead, so I have cut down. I've learned to keep my skin moisturised throughout the day which has helped. Thanks again

cetaphil moisturizer contains no perfume no lanolin also cetaphil gentle skin wash I use these for as I suffer from allergic sensitive skin also seborreic derm and rosacea .my friend a uses the cetaphil genle skin wash for shaving its so caring on your skin. I can get these in boots chemist.I have also purchased the sunblock from amazon as I wasnt able to purchase in England but that could have changed now. Just a thought e 45 contains lanolin I also used hyrocortisone made my skin react I try not to overheat avoid currys.

chandora profile image
chandora

Hello everyone - thanks for all your advice.

I must admit red wine is better for me than white wine. You would think red wine would increase the redness in my skin as years ago, I couldn't eat or drink many red coloured foods/drinks. But I've found that white wine can irritate my skin and the following day I wake up looking like I'm sunburnt!! Rose wine is even worse!

Lloyds Chemist have a fantastic new range of skin products. Check them out. I can't remember the French company but they are good. They have also extended the Eucerin range to facial washes, cleansers and toners and a new cream with green pigment to stop redness. Another bonus is that some of the creams have an SPF factor so can used safely in the sun - let's hope we get some this year - I am much better with natural heat than with the central heating!!

I have also found that avoiding certain foods/drink such as pork, beef, orange juice and strawberries can help. My doctor has recently changed my prescription cream to Cetraben and that is lovely and moisturising. It has no steroid in it so it can be used all over the body and face. Good luck to you all - I'm so glad we all have each other to help.

ziggy89 profile image
ziggy89 in reply to chandora

Hey Chandora, I use Centraben too, everywhere and have been using it for years. But have you seen the ingredients on the back? there are FOUR parabens inside it. My doctor never warned me and i never realised there were parabens in the cream.

I refused Cetraben from my GP because of the parabens - don't want to go there!!

I try to moisturize it with Clarins and drink lots of black tea bec of the flavonoids. It is supposed to help in the inflammation.

For a start on no account use any steroid like betnovate or hydrocortisone. If you think dandruff is implicated use baby shampoo every two days until clear. You will find BioOIl or the many cheaper alternatives of light liquid paraffin will suit your flaky dry skin and reduce the inflammation

I have bad eczema ( or something) on my face and have been using a salicylic acid cream which helped but kind of burned and was very expensive. Foderma serum seems to really help smooth out the crusty, scaly skin on my face. All skin is different and there are many disorders, but I would recommend trying this, it has really helped me, from the first day I put it on.
