ONce HIV enters our body, our body takes between 3 to 12 weeks to produce antibodies to the virus. Therefor, any test taken before 12 weeks after possibly infection event will not be able to determine if infection has taken place. So the 3-12 week period is called the 'window' period. Hope this helps.
