Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is associated with a 50 percent greater risk of death than non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Researchers analyzed medical records data on over 900,000 English people. They identified 2,701 people with NAFLD-spectrum conditions, including 1,294 with NAFLD, 122 with NASH and 1,285 with cirrhosis. They presented their findings at the 50th International Liver Congress in Vienna, Austria.

A total of 53.1 percent of those with cirrhosis died (from any cause), as did 22.1 percent of the people with NASH, and 14.5 percent of those with NAFLD. People with NAFLD had a lower incidence of congestive heart failure than those with NASH or cirrhosis.
