Kidney disease without cirrhosis?

I was successfully treated for hep C a couple of years ago after decades of infection. At that time I had stage 1/2 fibrosis with normal liver enzymes. I am now being investigated for kidney disease following tests coming back with high potassium levels. Years ago I read somewhere that hep C infection can increase the risk of kidney disease even without severely damaged liver. I can't find anything about that now. Anyone else experienced this?
