Extra-Virgin Olive Oil's Effects on the Brain

In yet another study on mice, extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) has been shown to reduce the buildup of amyloid plaques in the brain. Increased levels of these plaques are believed to provoke the onset of cognitive decline in the form of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

EVOO, researchers claim, activates an intercellular process called autophagy, in which cells clear out debris and toxins like amyloid plaques. This process may slow the effects of or even reverse cognitive decline.
