Hi everybody. My neuro has suggested that I learn Tai Chi for my balance problems. Has anyone done this? Has it helped? Thanks. Bill

Hi mitchdee. Thanks for the reply. I understand about the motivation. Yoga never excited me. The wii is a great idea. Thanks Bill

Hi Bill,

I had some lessons from a physio trained by the NHS because research has shown it to benefit the less mobile. I was given a DVD to follow up & yes it works (for me). Got to be worth a try.

Angela.

Hi Bill

There are many different schools of Tai chi. The first one i contacted warned me how strenuous it would be so maybe she followed the martial art emphasis. i attended a taoist tai chi class which encouraged a meditative approach. I was too busy trying to remember the move sequence to feel calm. I got a little bored i have to admit. However i read how good it is for us, may I'll try again one day.

Hi Hikoi

Thank so much for the reply.I have doing some studying; and your right about the many different schools. This approach seems more pro-active then just popping pills

I hope things are going well.

I had PD for 7 years when I started taking falls. I joined a Tai Chi class that met two evenings a week. The class was over after three months. I joined another class that lasted for one year. At the end, I went from falling two to three times per day to no falls for three years now. This instructor also showed us exercises that helped relieve chronic pain. Absolutely worth the time and money ($10.00 per session). Learning moves using a sword was especially enjoyable. Stick with it and let us know how things work out. Good luck.

I have been doing Tai Chi and yoga for a number of years, even before my diagnosis. I find that the yoga seems to help with loosening me up and also to encourage use of muscles that I am using less, because its easier to do stuff with the good side. The Tai Chi, I find invigorating even though I might feel really tired some days while I'm doing it, I know it helps. I also have acupuncture every few weeks and I feel that it has really eased my symptoms. I always feel less fatigued and my body feels looser after a session. Just starting qigong after reading about Howard Shifke and Bianca Molle. As far as I'm concerned, if they can do it then why not me? Watch this space!

Thanks Firefly; Did you take a class or are you self-taught?

Hi 151bill,

I've always taken classes but am about to try out a qigong dvd as well.
