I copied this from another post:

"Method: 32 patients with diagnosed iPD volunteered to participate in this study: 16 underwent 12 weeks HIIT and 16 age-matched served as a control group. The concentration of BDNF was determined by ELISA. Expression of miRNA in the serum was determined by real-time qPCR using specific primers TaqMan miRNA assay. WHOQOL-BREF survey was used for assessment the quality of life. Assessment of the improvement of neuroplasticity was determined by Purdue Pegboard Test. Patients examination and blood collection took place before and after the 12 weeks of HIIT from the all participants and one week after the training completion."

HIIT stands for hyper-intense interval training. I follow Dr Mercola's method. HIIT gets the heart rate to 90% or higher for 30 seconds with 90 seconds recovery, done 8 times. He started with a bike but switched to an elliptical trainer.

I do it on a treadmill. I walk for ten minutes to warm up. Then set the incline at 8% and speed at 6MPH. I'm straddling the belt as I do that. Then I jump onto the moving tread and run for 30 seconds, then jump back to straddling the tread for 90 seconds. I do a total of 8 sprints. I've spoken with Dr Mercola. He does not recommend using a treadmill, too much chance of injuring oneself. But I do it anyway. In summer I use the half-mile track. It's on a steep slope and approximates the 8% grade.

It took a few years to be able to do 8 sprints without getting tossed off the treadmill. I wear a heart rate monitor. There's a formula. 220 minus my age is 157, That's my maximum heart rate. I aim for hitting 90% or better in each sprint. I've been a distance runner for 40 years.

FOr HIIT the point is doing whatever is needed to get the heart to 90% for 30 seconds. Biking, elipticals, even swimming although I don't know if heart rate monitors are waterproof. If you're heaving, bent over trying not to barf, that's close to your maximum heart rate.
