Going on Medicare 3/1/14, and looking at the plans available. Any input on what works best or how AARP or Amac plans stack up?

I have humana. It's been good for me. Find an insurance rep in your area that can tell you what's available in your area and compare your options.
I had an advantage plan which was good but to increase my options I switched to a supplement with AARP United Health care. Since then I have had DBS surgery and I am pleased .
I advise you steer clear of Humana supplement or advantage plans. They have a truly dismal reputation for not approving procedures. For confirmation, they have (or had last year) a warning about Humana on the Medicare.gov site
I had signed my mom up on Care Improvement in 2012 and had nothing but problems. They'll pay for dentures and eye glasses, but when it comes to getting approval for Rehab or other medical needs, they will deny you 99% of the time. Also they will take up too 48 hours to give you an answer on approval or denying you. Anytime I would tell a doctor's office or hospital she had Care Improvement, they cringed! I was advised that straight Medicare was best. But you may have co pays and other cost if you just have medicare. I found that asking the Medical field was a great help. I would research and ask questions of people, who bill for services before making a decision. My mother's health suffered because she was denied rehab and needed it. But of course the great people on this site are the best source of information !!! This site has helped me in taking care of my mother. They give me an understanding of what is going on with her.
I have Aetna-Medicare through my retirement plan. I asked my favorite neuro what he takes and also checked which covered my meds.
I worked for Medicare for 15 years, doing a survey, of health care, cost, provider care, insurance cost and coverage, out of pocket cost etc. I worked in 3 different states most of the time, and a couple other states on occasion. Alot depends on where you live, even the county can make a difference. My hubby had PD and had been on disability 1 year today, he pays 18 dollars a month, plus what comes out of his social security, for a medicare advantage plan.. I worked with people from another county that had the same insurance and it was free to them. Generally I found that Humana is very poor quality care. AARP was high priced. You need to talk to an insurance person. I would recommend an advantage plan that covers cost that medicare doesn't, Just getting a plan that covers medications, or a plan that only covers the 20% Medicare doesn't pay can be costly. I have found that the advantage plans work best. They do differ from state to state and county to county, but they cover medical, hospital and drug cost.
