Does an allergy to cats automatically mean you're allergic to dogs?

Hi

I'm new here and wondered if I might be able to please ask your advice.

My 9 yr old daughter is allergic to cats, dust mites, grasses etc and displays rhinitis symptoms after exposure plus long term eczema.

My family are very keen to get a dog- preferably one of the so-called hypoallergenic breeds such as a cockerpoo.

1.Is anyone out there allergic to cats but not to dogs?

2. What would you recommend I do in terms of testing her before buying a puppy?

With many thanks in advance for any help/ advice.

Hi Clairewalker751 - good to hear from you! Hope you're doing ok? Thanks ever so much for your response. It's really helpful & quite a similar story to the responses I got when asking friends on FB. We're going to look at puppies on Thursday 😀😀

A one a day antihistamine may be helpful Aldi do them for pennies also I find laminate flooring and regular vacuuming helpful good luck! :-)

Aghh- more housework!! 😀 We're mostly tiles & old flagstones downstairs which will hopefully help and all agree no dogs allowed upstairs. Thanks Claire x

I would get tested. I’ve had eczema my whole life & my mom said it’s because I’m allergic to cats. I went to the allergist and had 78 items skin tested. Zero allergies! My eczema is not due to allergies.

So I got a dog and 3 cats now & we are all happy together!
