How can families and friends help a loved one transition to residential care?

My first thought is that I wouldn't want a relative to go into a care home but in a practical sense if this came to the crunch, I would choose one near enough for regular visits and make the room as homely as possible with respite visits before deciding on a permanent decision.

I agree, if the decision has to be made to do into a home I think respite visits leading up to it can help you decide which one...

One of the things we did was play to the personality of the person.

We talked with the staff and let them know that the person was a carer by nature and if they could give her opportunities to be helpful it would reduce the impact.

We also spent a lot of time with the person encouraging them to make new friends.
