Hello Mathew

People can experience tinnitus without hearing loss being present and without having hyperacusis.

Knowing the cause is helpful, because we all want to know why we are experiencing a specific health condition, as that may help us to identify which treatments may help us.

In the case of tinnitus, it isn't always possible to know precisely what the cause is - audiologists tell us that around 80% of attendees to clinics have some form of hearing loss and whilst that might be a good way of broadly diagnosing why something is experiencing ringing in the ears, it might not explain why it distresses them.

If you can identify why tinnitus causes problems or is a source of anxiety, you are closer to finding a way to cope with it.
