Has anyone been prescribed above medication due to severe itching with liver disease. Would like to hear of other people's experience with it

Thank you for getting back to me. About to start medication today. Have tried just about everything, drives me insane especially in evenings. Any ideas on how to detract from this terrible situation?

Have you had your bloods done and is this itch actually definitely related to your liver? Is your bilirubin really high?

If this is really the pruritis related to bilirubin then it's the anti-histimines, cool clothing, cold stuff on the skin that are the only short term fixes. The uncontrollable liver itch where you want to rip your skin off is one of the factors that gets someone bumped up the liver transplant list when they are on it.

Have you stopped drinking Wilma? because when you've posted in the past you hadn't. The only way you'll get your liver to give you less symptoms is by giving your liver the best chance at healing to some degree.

My problem is also worse at night. Have to drug myself to sleep. Was given Cholestyramine to reduce bilirubin but didn't help with itching. I have found 4% lidocaine patches to help me most at night. It is over the counter. Good luck. Wayne

Yes I have stopped drinking but in the past it has been a trigger to start drinking again as I don't itch when drinking. My bilirubin is very high, have stopped drinking for months at a time but itching doesn't appear to get better. Thanks for getting back to me, will keep persevering but quality of life not great

It took me about 18 months of abstinence for the itching to go away. It was dreadful! I was prescribed hydroxyzine - completely ineffective. Sleeping is finally becoming more normal at 2 years of sobriety. Just my experience, your mileage may vary. Best of luck to you.
