Has anyone applied for PIP in the UK for having Cirhosis
Cirrhosis: Has anyone applied for PIP in... - British Liver Trust
Cirrhosis
Sorry Tim, Having Cirrhosis isn't a disability nor does it prevent you from being able to work. Many people may at work with cirrhosis and not even know it.
Each case would have to be judged on it's own merits.
My husband gets Personal Independence Payment - Enhanced Daily Living (he scores on a great many of the descriptors based on chronic fatigue, minor HE symptoms and difficulty with cognitive tasks) and Basic Rate Mobility as he can't make journeys unaided. Because he gets PIP I am able to claim Carer's Allowance.
PIP isn't an in work/out of work benefit or means tested but is meant to support people with the additional costs that having a disability brings. It supports those with a disability or long term health condition (which is indeed classed as a disability under the equalities act).
It's not the condition itself which scores the points but how that disability or health condition affects you on a daily basis and with a range of what the DWP call 'descriptors'.
It can be a battle to get - we had to go through appeal tribunal to get hubbies first award having scored zero at face to face assessment despite being about to be listed for t/p at the time. Subsequently he's been awarded full enhanced rate and basic rate mobility.
It is well worth while getting Citizen's Advice Bureau to help with the application (or similar organization) plus I can wholeheartedly recommend the members guides for PIP application on the benefits and work website. benefitsandwork.co.uk/ (for a tiny fee they have a step by step guide to the whole process plus details on providing sufficient PROOF for your claim to be successful - you need to get your doctors on board to provide medical evidence because DWP will do nothing to help actually secure you an award).
* My hubby also qualified for Support Group of Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) because he is unable to work due to his condition ........... he previously worked as a welder in heavy engineering (an employment there is no way he could fulfill now plus he can't learn a new role because of his cognitive issues plus concentration difficulties, fatigue and general ups and downs of his condition). Hubby has cirrhosis due to auto immune hepatitis and also has mild HE as a side effect of his cirrhosis. He currently isn't in receipt of money from this award as he unfortunately lost his Dad but benefited from an inheritance which took us above the savings threshold so he currently just gets a 'virtual award' i.e. his National Insurance gets paid.
Best of luck with it.
Katie
I also get pip due to cirrhosis fatigue ect and get enhanced on both living and motorbility
Hi Tim it all depends on what symptoms you have and how it affects your daily life. The symptoms I have include chronic fatigue, mental confusion, episodes of hypoglycaemia due to glycogen deletion and peripheral neuropathy so am no longer anle to work. I receive income support and PIP. I've just started a new claim as my PN has got worse (awaiting neurologist appointment) and I have been diagnosed with a type of ptsd from my time in icu with liver failure. Filling in these forms is a nightmare and I would recommend you get some support with that. Most claims are rejected first time but a lot are awarded on appeal so persevere with it. I wish you luck with it Tim x
