There was significant research carried out which showed that the high levels of nicotine in vaping leads to fatty liver. The chemical in the various vaping fluids are unknown so could potentially prove dangerous to an already damaged liver. There is also evidence of lung damage due to vaping so if transplant was ever a necessity then damage to lungs could prevent transplant as your lungs need to be as healthy as possible.
Hi Mary,
As Katie has already said there is some preliminary research that indicates a possible link with vaping and accumulation of fat in the liver.
E-cigarette aerosols also contain chemicals which will partly be metabolized by the liver. Not enough research has yet been done on long term effect of using vapes.
We would suggest that you discuss the use of them with your GP and liver consultant who will be best placed to safely advise you.
Best wishes.

Hi there. I personally don’t vape but my family do & they happily vape around me, my hubby especially. I’m 2+1/2 years post liver transplant & it does concern me at times. I know vaping is seen as a safe alternative to smoking but I don’t believe it’s risks are as yet fully understood! Should I be overly concerned or just keep removing myself from my loving, vaping family? Bless em xxx
Hi moopie thank you for your help I gave up smoking 4 year ago and started back up on Monday but I have had a few cigarettes and I think I would find it hard to come back off that's why I'm asking about vaping because I found out on the 28th September that I have cirrhosis of the liver I don't drink anymore so I went back to smoking for something to stop me from wanting a drink x
Hi Moopie,
Can you perhaps discuss with the transplant team or your consultant? Keep us posted, we would be keen to know what they advise...
Warm wishes.
