Unfortunately this is a very common side effect from Spironolactone in men.

Gynaecomastia (breast growth in men) is also a common side effect of advanced liver disease as cirrhosis can cause all sorts of hormone imbalance in that your testosterone levels drop so other common symptoms are loss of male pattern body hair, testicle shrinkage and loss of libido and sexual function.

Blood work shows testosterone levels are normal. Coming off the tablets as advised by the consultant, see what happens.

Gynecomasty is formal name. Usually caused as side effects of prolonged use of certain meds. Meds are important! Don’t get caught up in “manboobs”. They happen. Many older guys have them. Get used to them-wear snug undershirts.

Ho Dean, was on between 100 and 400mg of spironolactone before transplant, and yep, developed the man boobs!! Plus they were really sore!! They reduced the dose down as much as possible but it remained sore until I stopped taking them.

It wasn’t great but it was manageable!! It’s one of those compromises. If I didn’t take the spiro I developed more fluid!! I’m afraid putting up with the boobs was the necessary result!!

Andy.

I am taking diuretics to reduce the development of ascites and when I first started on this medication had a similar problem. I was seen by a doctor who happened to have a student in attendance and was treated to a brief lecture on the relationship between the medication and this condition. I was, apparently, showing "classic" symptoms and there was nothing to worry about (i.e. it was not breast cancer), and it would reduce in time. The medication I was taking was Spironolactone 150mg and Bumetanide 1mg. Subsequently the Spironolactone dose has been reduced to 100mg and the problem seems to gone away. I hope this experience overlaps to some extent with yours - but I suggest you still get the condition checked out by a specialist.

All the best and good luck

Thank you. Yes I was taking them for ascites too,my nipples/breast really hurt. Spoke to my consultant,he said try coming off them, now on day three and see what happens. Ive heard of another water tablet called Furosemide which apparently doesn't have the same side affects,so waiting to see what happens. Thanks for your reply. Ps. I was on 100mg Spo.
