If you've had a biopsy during which they've found a granuloma this is basically a lump of the bodies immune cells which have clumped together to fight off some substance which it identifies as foreign and is trying to fight.

They can be present in a number of liver conditions as the immune system is trying to fight off the attack. It would be important now to establish what the underlying condition is that the immune system is battling.

This will likely involve lots more blood tests to check for viral hepatitis (A, B, C, E), Auto-Immune conditions, Genetic conditions etc.

In themselves this type of granuloma is not harmful but they are an indicator that your immune system is trying to fight something off.

If you haven't had a biopsy and you've perhaps only had a scan and doctors have called something a granuloma it means a small lump and will need further examination probably by a follow up CT or MRI scan. Small lumps in the liver can be totally benign (my hubby has several cysts plus a hemangioma in his liver and they get picked up on U/S but are totally harmless). They would want to rule out anything more sinister - but don't panic.

All the best, Katie
