The reason of asking this is, we organize a lot of awareness presentations for educating breast cancer to the lay man, how to detect early, what to do etc (in Mumbai, where we are based). But, our experience is, given a choice, most women do not bother to attend such presentations. The only place where attendance is decent where all have been compulsorily instructed to attend. We do not like that, we wish more people turn up on their own.

At the same time, oncologists in Mumbai continue to see most breast cancers fairly progressed, rarely in earlier stages. When I ask my patients, "How long have you been having this lump", answers like "2 months", "3 months", or even "6 months" are not uncommon. I tell in my mind, "My dear lady, what were you doing all this time?". It's painful. Patients don't realize that waiting for 2 months can reduce their life by 2 years (or even more)!!

We need to act somewhere. A massive awareness initiative is needed.

We wish to know your view

Hi Cheery,

Sure. Once we have a sizeable number, we will start organizing survivor meets as well, which would be helpful to each other and many others.

Hi Kalpanabakshi,

There are no precautions as such. Just take care of the hand, of the side you were operated on. You can also observe the following things:

1. Regular exercise in some form. It is essential to keep fit and to keep body weight under check

2. Get your Vitamin D levels done. Ensure, that they are in normal limits.

Are you taking Tamoxifen or Letrozole or Anastrozole?

Regular exercise, to maintain movement

Avoid needle pricks (no injections, no blood collection from that arm)

If swelling is there, you can also do 'lymphedema' exercises. You can search on google for the same.
