Welcome to the British Lung Foundation in the North West region.

Based with the helpline in Liverpool, we cover the North West which has a population of 7.3 million. 10% of the population have COPD and/or Asthma and we have some of the highest prevalence rates in the UK. Hotspot areas identified by the British Lung Foundation include Liverpool, Knowsley, and Manchester to name a few.

We work closely with Respiratory Leaders within the NHS at regional and local level to support their work in improving the quality of services for people with lung disease.

At time of writing we have 30 open and active Breathe Easy self help support groups, all of which are organised and run by fantastic volunteers who have experience of life with lung disease and who are committed to providing support, information, and hope to anyone affected by lung disease. Many of the groups are fortunate to have regular support of healthcare professionals who bring medical expertise to their activities. You will find a full list of our North West groups on the BLF web site.

If you would like to know more about the work of the BLF North West team, we'll be pleased to hear from you. You can e-mail us northwest@blf-uk.org or give us a call on 0115 244 7778.

Hello

Without going in to too much detail, decisions/ money allocation is often decided on health of the population. For example for COPD the Prevalence of people with COPD in England is 3.7% national average, Cumbria is also 3.7% (2010 east region public health observatory) but for places like Liverpool it is 5.7% and in Manchester it is 4.7%. This can be due to many factors including industry, smoking rates etc. Areas with a high prevalence can often see high rates of hospital admissions which in turn increases the amount of money spent on COPD care. Areas Like Liverpool will implement services to try and reduce or identify those patients earlier so that they can avoid those admissions and thus save money.
