Gosh, you are so lucky to see one as close as that! Just look at the colours in its feathers!

I've not seen one this close since childhood , it's a nice surprise

RoadRunner44 profile image
RoadRunner44 in reply to soulboy118

Why do you think it was on your gate? Do you have any bird feeders close by?. I know sparrow hawkes are on the lookout for sparrows, hence it's name. I ask as I feed the birds and put out a dish for ground feeding birds each day. A white sparrow comes with a group of other sparrows and after seeing your bird so close makes me wonder.....

A nice surprise today though,a little squirrel also came for a feed at the dish. Do sparrow hawkers eat squirrels?

soulboy118 profile image
soulboy118 in reply to RoadRunner44

Sparrow hawks are equal opportunity hunters, any small prey they will take but as the name suggests they do like sparrows .I do have a feeder near by but dont use it in summer , I feed in the winter months

I was gobsmacked don, couldnt get my phone out for a pic quick enough ,

It was there for a couple of mins ,I even knocked on the window to get it to turn around and it did lol,it was very sure of itself

in reply to soulboy118

Do you get sparrows in your garden? I have seen one in mine for years yet they used to be prolific. Loads of wood pigeons.

in reply to

Haven't!!

My hedge is brilliant for sparrows , they love its density for safety , theres always lots hanging around so I can see the correlation between prey and predator but I only put food out in winter mostly , sometimes during breeding season I take pity on them and put a few handfuls 9f wild bird seed out

Sparrows have disappeared in the US too sad to say. MmeT

Sure dont here in south Dakota anymore--Pheasant season started this weeknd here--I hate that--such beautiful birds and they are getting scarce due to hunting--There are 2nd and 3rd generation hunters that come here every year from out of state--just to shoot such beautiful creatures. I will never undersand and not sure I want to--Peace-MmeT

in reply to madametobacco49

I’ve never seen a pheasant here in Louisville KY! Now growing up in Michigan and going back often I saw one getting a little too close to the road! They’re beautiful I agree... They’re quite a few there.

Hi dk--We are swamped with hunters chasing the few we have left. As you know they are not native to South Dakota. Our airports is full of hunters comin in from all over--Bars and strip clubs are rockin. Some guys hunt--some like the "get-away" It is a money maker here at birds expense....I remember as a child my step dad "cleaning" them in the kitchen" like he had killed a lion. Silly and sad even to a little girl--Well Im off on a rant--Apologies. MmeT

Wonderful. I have a feeder on my balcony, but the squirrels eat the seed in it, then eat the feeder too. They only eat the green plastic bits . Tnis then lets any remaining seed cascade out to the ground beneath. Costs me a fortune in sunflower seed . The goldfinches come and queue up but the squirrel beats them to it.

soulboy118 profile image
soulboy118 in reply to Jaybird19

Buy a metal bird feeder ,well if you can find one which I'm assuming might be difficult

Jaybird19 profile image
Jaybird19 in reply to soulboy118

Yes i had one but it is too heavy for the situation . The feeder hangs over a drive and walkway and it could cause someone a headache if it fell on them . I dropped the plastic one and lost all the seeds out of it so the pigeons had a field day. I go to the window above and direct a jet of water at the squirrel when i see him- and hope no-one is underneath. Very satisfying! There is a you-tube video of feeder that does beat the squirrel. It spins round faster and faster as it clings on desperately.

I love it.!

Your lovely picture certainly raised a lot of interest . Well done

So lucky to be able to snap the sparrow hawk. I have a bird feeder and love to watch the birds gather around clinging on whilst they feed. I get a variety of birds however can only name a few types. The squirrels have climbed up the post or jumped across from the fence though this year I haven't seen many of them around the feeder.

Magnificent bird, you got a really got photo Soulboy, they dont normally come that close, think I would frame this one., thanks for sharing .The sparrows were missing for years in my garden, but have started to come back in two's and threes', Im sure it was down to slug pellets and the like killing them off. I try not to use anything like this in the garden now. My feeder attracts alot of birds so do enjoy watching x

We were lucky when we lived in Somerset that we had a wooded part at the end of the garden. We had a pair of sparrow hawks that would hunt there.

We have quite a few of these down here in the Weald of Kent. See them around most days. I have a particular favourite who hunts by where the high speed rail link intersects the A20. He’s been working that territory for a long, long time. Saw him this afternoon on my way to Sainsbury’s! Not so pleasant when they catch a small bird and rip it to shreds in front of your very eyes like happened in my garden last summer. Also I’ve seen one sweep down and take a little bird in mid air while it was approaching our bird feeding station. Blink and you would have missed it. Nature can be very unpleasant some times but they are truly amazing birds.

Oh how lovely soulboy118 . In the back ground I saw something resembling cat ears and got a bit worried. 😟 Just behind that long bush. But I'm sure it's not a cat. 😼 Or is it?? xx 🙋

soulboy118 profile image
soulboy118 in reply to Caspiana

There are a few pesky cats around here but I give them a cold reception when they appear in my garden, they generally know to leave casa Dave's alone , the " cats ears " are actually a window with a net curtain pulled up coincidentally in the shape of cats ears lol ,

You must have lots of bird feeders around. We occasionally get one of these beauties hiding in the dead part of a fir tree in our garden waiting to pounce on the small birds.

Plenty of birds around here , In winter i make a lard and wild bird seed cake for them and they LOVE,it , most of my neighbours have bird feeders in there gardens

soulboy118 profile image
soulboy118 in reply to agammyt

Got to agree on the disliking killing but nature I can accept if it's for food , cats on the other hand kill for fun I wont tolerate them in my garden and they do tend to keep away
