I'm still here. when I';m away I 'm practising scales. Today, B flat Major. When we broke off for eht summer, my teacher left me with a hint for summer work: Scales are really important, you get good marks for them at exams. OK got the point , and I admit it's true: Here's an example from a BAroque flutist, Michel Blavet.

Do you have to sing for flute exams? My husband did when he got to Grade 5. He didn't take any more Grades although he trained for years to reach concert standard. Trouble with him is he gets appalling stage fright. The last Concert he did put him off for life.

You certainly do for the aural exam asd you have to echo the little tunes the examiner prods at you!

Also you have to sing or say what is the difference between 2 pieces which have a change of notes or rhythm.

I was a bit frightened at prospect of playing in public. BUT, I boosted my confidence when I played the flute for the church in an open field! I'm jolly glad that the examiner will keep in a fairly warm place in a Methodist church in Canterbury! At least, the wind will not blow my tunes away!

Scales should boost my confidence too. I am beginning to play them ... and crazily, I love them! Cheers, Mic
