hi I have had asthma for 52 years yes in more recent years i get pain on my left side of my chest. It can be so easy to pull a muscle when you are coughing all the time can you take any pain killers?

I think you need something to help break-up your phlegm. You should speak to your pulmonary doctor about what is causing the phlegm (could be sinus drip) and what option you have to help loosen it. Coughing so much or so hard that you are hurting your muscles and then taking pain killers to mask the hurt doesn't sound like a good program to be on.

Carrying on about breaking up the phlegm, you could ask your doctor for Mucodyne which helps with the explelling of it.

I also recommend a g.e.n.t.l.e Active Cycle of Breathing Technique (ACBT). Here's a video about it:

I also had that kind of atrocious muscular pain. Pain killers containing codeine might help. But Ibuprofen gell is a good anti pain cream, but it will take a few days before your muscles go back to normal. Hot or cold compresses might help. I applied Ibuprofen gel for a few days.

Hope this helps.

Pain killers will help, but not ibuprofen they effect your breathing, I found paracodol were the best, but beware of constipation if you take too many. You can get codeine from the doctor but again beware of the side effects. If he gives them to you ask for something to prevent constipation last thing you need with damage muscles is extra pain.

Hello, I have the same problem and often pull muscles around my rib cage. Sometimes I'm not sure if it's just a pulled muscle or a sign of infection when it correlates with the bottom area of my lung. I often find that if i do pull one quite badly then i'm unable to cough phlegm up as easily and then i can be at higher risk of infection anyway! I agree that something to thin the phlegm may help, or if you haven't already, see if you can get any more meds to help relieve the coughing.

I think you should go to see your GP, and get your chest examined. It may be that you have an infection, or you need your medication reviewed. I know all about pain in the side when coughing. I had such a violent and prolonged cough for 15 months that I damaged my neck and got neuralgia in my head, and am still undergoing treatment for it. I am just telling you this so that you do not let things go on too long unchecked. Maybe all you need is a stronger or different inhaler and a chest x-ray. If you are coughing up mucous (phlegm) then something like mucodyne will help thin down the mucous and make it easier to cough up. If you have a dry cough then it is no use at all to you. You really need to be medically examined, so I would try and get an appointment for Monday, and get this sorted out. When I had all the muscular pain from coughing, it was in both sides, my stomach and back. It was very painful, but I just had to put up with it as I can't take paracetamol or codeine. We asthmatics cannot take anti-inflammatories. I ended up with a stronger preventative inhaler, and a new one for me which was Spiriva. I also have ventolin when required. Hope you can get this sorted out soon, and feel better. Take care, hugs xx
