An old mate mentioned somebody called a respiritory physiotherapist the other day. That's a new title to me. Has anybody run across one or had my mate got it wrong?

Yes, I saw one for a while. He visited me at home and helped with special exercises and then I was referred on to a PR course.
Was it useful? I start a PR course on Monday. Should I ask to see a physio as well?

Good luck with that Bobby,not started one yet,I think they want to get all these tests done first.let me know how it goes. Are you taking Spike ?

Hullo young David. PR stands for Pulmonary Rehabilitation. They teach you how to exercise properly and how to breathe better. It's supposed to be very worthwile going on one.

It is well worth going on but you need the right mind set. I went thinking "This aint for me"....it was in a gym for heaven sakes. If I wanted exercise I took the batteries out of the tv remote. I thought I'd give it a go for a couple of sessions and retire from it gracefully....but no, it was very addictive and at the end of the six weeks, I had gained so much, not just in breathing but confidence and friendship. Our course was run by a Pysio terrorist but the team were great. Everoyne was monitored , encouraged and helped. Brilliant.
I had to see a physiotherapist as i have bronciecatasis he was not a respitory one though just showed hubby how to tap my back to help bring up mucus. He was not very good though as he said he had never had a respitory patient before and had to go and look it up in a book

Had a pilot like that on a holiday flight once Julie. At least, I think he was reading it from a book.

Number one son had a terrible time on one. He went to one of the very small islands in the Maldives. You cover the last part in a tiny seaplane and it scared the hell out of him. His wife said she was glad she had a good supply of Tena Lady's with her. lol

I saw one for about 9 months. He was very excellent. He taught me how to breathe again and changed my life. An excellent man indeed. I saw him on a one-to-one basis.

He corrected my breathing - he has strong ideas about how life's stresses make us change the way we breathe, using only the top third if our lungs. Allowing the bottom 2 thirds to remain unused and an ideal breeding ground for all sorts of horrors. I now breathe like a newborn baby.

It sounds as if you were happy with how he taught you to breathe. I will certainly bear it in mind.

I saw one for a while. They teach you how to breathe correctly and carry out active breathing techniques etc.

yes was sent to one thought get a bit of fitness back .. she looked at notes and said sorry best you can do is walk to front gate and back waiting for op on a hernia now been told carnt do hernia lungs to bad

Not sure how it works with copd but with bronchiectasis it is essential you are seen by a respiratory physiotherapist and any resp consultant worth his/her salt would refer a non cf bronch to a resp pysio in the same way they would with cystic fibrosis. They teach you how to do various methods of mucus clearance and breathing techniques. As bronchs need physio every day and sometimes more than once you would be expected to do physio yourself. Resp physios in the community are rare.
When I was a kid I used to have to leave school at 2 oclock and go on 2 buses twice a week to the hospital for physio - hence why I am now so thick. As I say love not sure of the protocol with copd.

I don't know which lessons you missed but English certainly wasn't one of them. I dare say all will become clear tomorrow at PR. Mind you, it is with the same team that tried to kill me off at the assessment stage. A real bunch of sadistic nurses.
