There is very little practical information on ill health retirement especially if under 50 and and services available so definitely yes please. I've gone through the process now but help and advice would have been greatly appreciated. Many services out there will not kick in until you are over 50 or 55 so I totally fell through the net.

I must be lucky in the Cambs area, support and options up until 65 (the great old lottery postcode rears its ugly head)

I am now past this stage as already retired and receiving my late husband's annuity. Although he didn't have lung disease he did have a terminal illness and had to sort out his bits of pensions from previous employers so that I could benefit. The only option was to go to a financial adviser who had experience of sorting out the best possible annuity for terminally ill patients and, of course, a percentage of his pension pot paid for this service. It would have been very helpful for him (us) if the sort of advice you are considering offering had been available back then.

Welfare rights be good idea if first 5 mins of tory govermeant are out to go by

L have been retired 20 years plus, having been self employed. Our pension pots were quite small but we had funds in bonds on advice from a finance person, we lost a large amount through the bonds which were tied in. Yes it would have been good for me to have independent and free advice. So my vote is yes for future retirees, if that is a word?

I have found the financial side of things a very big rigmarole, as my wife is a nursing sister we can't claim a thing (oh forgot £52 per week) no free prescriptions no free anything unless my wife drops below 30 hours at work, that way we will still still be worse off, my prescription cost more than i get per fortnight.

Hi FarmerD. Yes i started that a few months back, did not know it existed until then, makes it a bit easier on my panicking wallet. I even get paracetamol on it now. Thank you for the reply, if you see a credit card running past your house grab it, its mine that escaped

If any body has a particular question ask me I might be able to help, until they set it up .Of course it would be a great idea,as long as they don,t try to sell us anything.D.

If any of you are on meds for under active thyroid, you never have to pay any prescriptions again, if you work or not, Sally x

What would be good, Is something like the Parkinson society.

They have part time area reps . Some are ex social workers. Who will visit you in your own home, and advise what benefits you are entitled to, and to help !! if not fill in the necessary forms so that you can obtain them.

great idea i'm all for it, would also like to know when to retire, when I cant walk, when I cant sleep, when I feel I don't want to, when I cant lift boxes etc

FarmerD profile image
FarmerD in reply to the-db

Hi The DB,according to Iain Duncan Smith if you can lift an empty box above your head you are fit and able to work.I can,t but I applied for a job at The Empty Box Shop because I reckon I could just kick the box along the floor( stupid old Iain did,nt think of that ) I,m still waiting to hear from The Empty Box Shop. D. 😎

in reply to FarmerD

That made me laugh! even though its too near the truth to be funny! A lot of people who voted Mr Cameron etc back in have got a big shock coming. Theyve all got it in for disabled people. Mr Duncan Smith tries to pretend cutting benefits and having sanctions is "to help people back to work". Nothing to do with raising money to cut taxes for the well off. He obviously thinks the public are stupid and when you see what happened at the last election hes right! I wouldnt mind Mr Corbyn winning the Labour contest I dont think hed be any good but he will stir things up a bit eh, robin

Hi, the way I see it with this illness, that if I make it to retirement age, i'm sure I will have no energy to enjoy any retirement, I would like a couple of years before that stage to get round a little

I have pulmonary hypertension but nobody seems to know anything about it. Maybe if the BLF could publicize this as well as they do OCPD, Asthma, Pulmonary Fibrosis for which I can find pamphlets this would help. I keep looking for one of your help pamphlets about this condition but the only place I get help is at PHA the Pulmonary Hypertension Association. I feel that BLF is letting me and all the others who suffer from this conditon down. I know it is a rare disease but even so, people should know more about it and be aware of it. Because of this their doesn't seem to be any help out there with regards to financial help in any form.
