Which of these titles do you think would appeal to people newly diagnosed with COPD - to encourage them to attend a self-management course.

I don't think many men would choose to say they were attending Elsie or Esme!

I think COPE says it all without the need for lengthy titles.

I have never been offered any of these, 8 years on I wish I had.

Are these courses available now?

The question was about newly diagnosed people. I think COPE explains itself best, the other names are too complicated for a newbie.

Asking new ones why they did a course not telling them what they want always been a rebel late changing now.

When first diagnosed you don't even really know what C.O.P.D. means, so it is a good opportunity to learn more about what life now has in store for you !

Whatever there is available, theres not enough of it in most areas.

I get confused as sometimes they say with me having COPD and then say but with you having RLD your inhalers do not work you need a life style change

Cope is simple and self explanatory. Easy to remember.

yes, COPE is the most acceptable as far as I'm concerned.

As a newly diagnosed COPDer Iike COPE

I want to be educated as much as possible about my new diagnoses.

While the nurse at our surgery is lovely, she got my cough under control and I don't see her for 6 months. I haven't smoked for 15 years so she doesn't seem to think there's anything g else I need to know! Coming on here has been a Godsend

Hi what did the nurse do to get your cough under control, only I've had a cough for 15 months Bliss x

HI Bliss2, I am also newly diagnosed, and my extrememly violent and prolonged coughing was finally brought under control my Spiriva inhaler and mucodyne capsules. The capsules break up and thin down the mucous and make it easier to cough up. This site has been a godsend to me and I have learned so much. By the way I had my cough for around 15 months as well and it was very debilitating. If you are not already on the meds I have mentioned above, If I were you I would be asking about them. Good luck and I hope that cough goes away soon.xx

copd education programme should include all the suggested things

frank65 profile image

the problem is most people don't know anything about copd i did'nt i had to learn

papageno profile image

problem with COPE is that, once again, it discriminates against other lung disease sufferers [bronchiectasis, aspergillos, IPF and many many other respiratory conditions]. All lung disease sufferers should have access to programmes of rehabilitation and self management.

Taking about discrimination: what about those suffering from sickle cell disease?? They too need access to such community programmes.

well said papageno, I dont find any of them useful but then most dont know enough about copd to begin with - including GPs!!

Why try and have a silly acronym? That idea is old fashioned now. Just call it what it is - Self-management for newly diagnosed COPD sufferers.

COPE - its what we have to do!

The main problem is when the patient receives the New Help. Some people can be affected more than others with this kind of bad news and so this should be borne in mind e.g. bedside manner can deter some patients. If the message can be fully explained by the diagnostician, the outcome will probably be more than 50% success on take up.

If it is just a hand full of leaflets etc go and have a go- I don't think that is very hopeful.

EXCEL "Exercise, COPD, Education & Lungs" is telling a new comer to this disease that self management is a starting point. Exercise being the big word. Well I have been looking at the screen for a while thinking about my own situation, stage IV, and I think that EXCEL is good.

The word cope to me explains copd. Until I got some medicine I was not in the mood to exercise. Nourishment and education is vital for health.

hi invisible23, i see you. ha ha. exercise is the main thing to keep us going. yes we do need good diet to feed our exercises which really keep us going. Our balloons (lungs) require more exercise than regular folks. Cheers Dave from the LoS.

in reply to yorkie70

It says new people ,at the start exercise is the last thing on your mind ,later on yes, new people need more knowledge!

in reply to

Newly diagnosed and muscles have already began de conditioning as we slow down.

I would disagree that "exercise is the last thing we need" it is the most powerful treatment more effective than any inhaler or drug yet known.

Once muscle condition is lost it really is hard getting it back ask any physiotherapist they can give the science I can only say how difficult I found it personally.

cope says it all really

undine profile image

when I was first diagnosed I was extremely depressed and wondering how I was going to cope - so COPE is ok but still I think a bit depressing so I would prefer EXCEL as it is to me more uplifting and gives the notion of something to aim for rather than just 'coping' - although I do accept above I am outnumbered on this.

COPE is a strong title and similar enough to COPD for the connection to be made easily.

ESME and ELSIE are wealk and wishy-washy, and EXCEL is a Microsoft computer programme. All 3 are irrelevant.

COPE is an excellent acronym. To be honest, it's just as well because I think the others are absolutely no good at all.

Everyone is different, when I first found out I had copd.it was not long before I had the most violent lung attack after being on steroids for 10 days,I was exhausted rushed to hospital, heart rate 168.when I came out I found I was house bound ,could not get out to my car even, also I had no appetite so was getting thinner, bony ,I had letter to do rehab I felt so overwhelmed and exhausted as I lived on my own, every time I told the docs I was house bound ,it went unheard,so that's why I felt I needed some help before exercise . No one could have been fitter than me,walked miles, dancer, never sat down.to go to exhaustion with no help to get stronger, what does one do!

I voted for Elsie as I thought using a name was far better to remember EXCEL did not get my vote as I thought this could easily get mixed up with the microsoft programe for spread sheets ESME was good but dificult to remember and some how I could not go go with COPE as that is what most of do each day

Marian-Anne profile image

I think Exel is a title people will not forget, says everything it needs to say and does have any female connections!

fit if they been on a course ha ha

I love the word exel. .but the question was about how u feel in beginning, exel is later on.

in reply to

Education / Exercise for the mild - moderate with COPE for severe - very severe the beginning happens at different stages with quite different needs at each stage in my experience.

Personally I have less concern over the name of such courses than a shortfall in provision nationally. Anything that can be provided must be an improvement on long waiting lists and sparse support for ongoing exercise maintenance programs.

papageno profile image
papageno in reply to sitstand

You are right. Provision of such services is much more important than yet another acronym. And as said before, we also need to stop discriminating against people who suffer from other lung diseases. why should COPD sufferers get exclusivity in community services?? This leads me in fact to mention that people with heart failure should also be included in community rehab courses: information, support to start self management and self care, exercises at different levels, information on medicine adherence etc... Such inclusivity might also make rehab easier and cheaper to commission.
