The one here does not seem to be running anymore.

Hi

Send me your details and I can see if there is another group close by - or even there may be plans to set up a new group so we could add you to the mailing list.

Thanks

What advantages are there in belonging to one?

Are they all over the country?

Will I have to travel to attend?

I have to travel 30mins in car, but they are brilliant , my blf even got on to my gp, they do a marvellous job do join the support is great ,if I get scared I can ring aidrian our local official blf, for advice

Not aware of any activity on Merseyside

in reply to

Hi

There are groups on Merseyside - 2 in Liverpool - a couple on the Wirral. St Helens and Kirkby have groups - and then north to Crosby and Southport.

So give us a call - 03000 030 555 - and we can give you details of your nearest group.

There isn't one in St Albans and I am unable to travel too far afield

It is a very supportive group both socially and medically with frequent speakers on specific health areas affecting COPD sufferers and their carers. I can't recommend it more highly.

I'd like to attend one but my local group only meets during the day and I still have to work unfortunately. If ever there was an evening meeting, I would be happy to go along and meet others

I'm in the same situation and it's a real shame because I need all the help I can get in staying healthy and able to work.

Well worth joining a B E group. You get to know of others problems that might be similar to yours. You get talks or we do on lung conditions from registered nurses and others connected with lung conditions. The Horsham & Crawley AGM is on Tuesday the 16th April

at St Marks Church Hall. North Heath Lane Horsham at 12.45 PM. contact Jean 01403 267431

If there was a group close enough I would love to go, but they seem few and far between here, and I cant get to any of them.

The nearest group would involve long bus journeys so not really possible for me.

Gordon57 profile image

I was attending one in Doncaster but through the winter I've not been well enough to venture out. It's two buses each way and quite a bit of walking. It's beyond my capacity since I last went but I will consider going again if I manage to get my own transport.

For that reason I've not ticked any of the boxes as I was a member or one, but don't think it would be right to say I'm not a member either. There was no option that suited.

in reply to Gordon57

I would suggest that you do vote as you have a link with a group - and that really is all I'm interested in finding out about.

I will look to see if there are any in my area Lincolnshire. I know of one near Grantham that I used to really love going there, but it was too far to travel so I had to stop. However if any one out there lives near there then I can really reccomend they go as it is very good with really friendly people and interesting talks etc.Best wishes

Doesn't appear to be one anywhere near me in fairly rural north Wales. Looks like the nearest one might be about 50 miles away (like the PR which the nurse said was too far away).

I would love to be able to attend one, there are just not any local enough to me.

I live in East Anglia. My closest are Waterbeach, Thetford and Bury St Edmunds

I'm right in the middle in a totally rural situation, with little public transport.

I joined the newly formed Coventry group when it first started, however after having a broken shoulder and being treated as if I did not have a lung condition because I didn't attend a certain consultants clinic I decided it wasn't worth the bus journey to the city for an hour or so's meeting and did not bother going back. However the chairperson did keep in touch by email until her husband passed away and the committee changed.

I've ticked yes for Yorkshire :) but I'm not yet officially a member until I've been to my first meeting, but I have met the lady who runs the Batley group and also spoken to her on the telephone, so I do consider myself to be a member :)

richardcrossroads profile image

hello

I have looked into it and there is not one in easy reach, it is a problem for rural sufferers to get to these things, I also looked into starting a group but my health is variable and I could not guarantee being able to devote enough time, and also do I really need that sort of hassle,

as I have heard that it is difficult to keep the groups running,

I have talked to the oxygen nurse and also the team who ran pulmonary rehab and they had no interest, or the time,

there is a need to get the services altogether BLF, NHS, local councils and sufferers and develop some thing useful,

regards Richard

I would like to go to the one in Stockport I went once but couldn't get out of my car :( I have a phobia going somewhere strange on my own

I even asked on here if anyone lived in the area and I would willingly pick someone up locally and take them but no one responded. I did speak to someone as well at the COPD desk on COPD day and left my phone number but again no response

So my answer is NO

I am going for PR next wednesday and have been told that there is a group not too far from where I live, the lady who runs it will be there to give us information as to when and where so I am hoping to join in the near future.

I went to a meeting in Scunthorpe this week to try to find out if I could benefit from being a member of the group and to see if there is any other local assistance other than the G.P..

Like halsa...I live near Eastbourne and the nearest one to us would be Brighton. ,which isn't too far if you drive...about 3/4 hour, but it is a long bus journey.

hi evelene can i ask wat copd u are im moderate no thanks to my ex gp ignoring my last years xrays do u live local in oldham ,i do take care

in reply to

Hi caroll . I dont know how bad it is to be honest. saw the surgery nurse this morning when I had the breathing test. COPD did not show up on my computer page so she had to update it and said she would delve further from my hospital diagnosis to find out what change there has been. When pressed she did say the breathing test wasnt good but said because I gave up smoking. properly take my medication and get out walking about as often as possible.I am doing the best thing to help my condition. I will settle for that for now. Hope you are well.

I have to travel 30 miles to one. We used to have one in the town I live but it folded as not enough people turned up. It would be good if there was one in the town but why is there no interest when I know there are a lot of people with COPD? The Healthy Lives program has a lot of people attending.

Would like to go to one. Managed 2 meetings of the Dorchester group just before it folded. Weymouth just a bit too far (45 minutes drive), but thinking about it.

I went to a group a couple of times, several years ago, but everyone other person there was much older and had COPD so it wasn't really relevant to me

I live in NE London, Leytonstone on the border of Redbridge. My nearest FTB seems to be in Hackney about 4 miles. As the crow flies it does not seem far but although public transport is v good in London, the traffic congestion on this particular journey is horrendous. I would get a cab but it would cost at least £20 both ways. We had a car but handed them back to the company when we took early retirement. No point driving in London.

Be great to have a FTB in Waltham Forest borough ( pop. 275,000 ) .

I do have one quite near me - well a 40 minute bus journey and keep meaning to go. But the first time I was too depressed to venture out, the 2nd time I had a chest infection, the 3rd time I forgot and the 4th I had another appointment. I mean to go next week but I have streaming cold and not sure If I will make it.

Bev x

I used to live in Hackney beatles! Doesn't the 56 bus take you there? You should be used to traffic congestion living in London...

There are also two train stations in Hackney. Hackney Downs and Hackney Wick.

There is a fledgling group based in Elgin, Moray, hopefully to be fully endorsed as a full B/E group soon. Not presently detailed on the BLF website. Call me on (number remobed by Mod) for full details. We need each other.

Send wullymiff a message if you want to find more about the Elgin group or call the Helpline - 03000 030 555 - for the contact details.

I go to mine in Lanchester it is very rewarding only problem is bus fare not cheap and i cannot afford the outings.

It would be lovely if there were more of these groups as they do benefit us,

It is nice to meet other people who are going through the same as you.

greetings to Mark and Team, I'm not the patient I'm the other half (not sure which half yet),still coming to terms with prognosis, Your comms web-site is brilliant if I could only get the patient to get involved! We have a breathe easy group near but the GP said it's for COPD not IPF in which case I don't want to take up a place needed for COPD. Any info on groups for IPF would be appreciated..Keep the Grin Above the Chin ! AL

in reply to ageing-lioness

Hi

The groups are for all conditions and for people with the condition and also their partners or carers.

A lot of the group members do have COPD but their are other type of conditions represented. The BLF is doing more to increase the awareness of IPF so hopefully we will start to see more and more IPF people there.

So the GP was wrong - the groups are not just for COPD. So get in touch with your local group. Also in some areas e.g. the north west, there are meetings for people with IPF - I think the meeting is in June. So get in touch with your nearest BLF office to find out what is going on in your area. Call us on 03000 030 555 to discuss.

The nearest Breathe easy group for me is quite a distance (about 40 miles). Whilst i could drive down the timing doesn't often suit as I work full time. I do hope to get down to one to see what its like.

Marie

No I have not ever been - just looked on-line and have three that I could attend probably all about 10 miles away and would have to go by car, not sure about parking, but might think about joining

We have all agreed that our Breath Easy group is a very important link for all of us and would urge any copd sufferer to join one if they possible can. We've had some very informative talks given by professionals covering various aspects of the illness. Also the tips and help that are passed around the table by members, to each other, is invaluable.

I have gained so much information that GPs, clinics, hospitals, etc. don't have the time (or in a some cases, it seems, the interest!) to give us.

I think i got the wrong end of the stick, i joined a copd rehab group, it was initially 10 weeks for two hours w week, the first hour was axercise then a tea or coffee then information on how to manage your condition with all sorts of information leaflets, a lot of them blf ones. I really did look forward to going. When the 10 weeks were over they have an hours meeting once a fortnight just for a drop in and information and company.

Hello I run a support group for COPD sufferers and their family/carers , we set up 8 years ago with the help of the BLF after we had all completed our Pulmonary rehab course, we then found there was no maintenance group! I would say to all COPD patients try and find a local group the benefits are really worth it, not just physically but the opportunity to learn about your condition and talk to others who understand your concerns . Our group is based in Hedge End in Southampton . Details if you wish ?

Help is always out there so dont isolate yourself .

I am with the breathe easy lewisham . I am the secretary of the group. I joined to support my husband. We are a nice informative group. We have speakers and community and respiratory nurses come to give talks. We meet every 2nd Thursday of every month from 11-1. Please feel free to join.
