Given the seriousness of our conditions, this may seem a bit frivolous but it is concerning me. I regularly go to the hairdressers, for colouring, roots etc., and when I get my hair washed/rinsed I lean forward over the sink as a neck problem means I can’t do backwards.

My question, I am nearly 4 weeks post heart attack and just over two weeks post having 2 stents. When will it be okay to go and get my hair done please, given the process takes some time? Any thoughts?

Hi i had my hair coloured at 4 weeks after HA and stents. No problems experienced. No reaction to meds. I was on triagrelor, bisoprolol and asprin. No problems on clopidogrel either. Hope this helps. 😁

I found the smell of the dye and the salon made me a bit breathless but other than that no real problems. As an aside you may be interested to know there is a recognised, very rare, syndrome that affects people who lean backwards over the sink to get their hair washed:

Less known is beauty parlour syndrome – or vertebrobasilar insufficiency – the term for a stroke thought to be caused by getting your hair washed at a salon. Experts believe that the process of tilting the neck backwards over a basin can, on extremely rare occasions, tear the artery, leading to blood clots and strokes.

My hairdresser told me about it years ago - but he still washes everyone's hair with them leaning backwards over the sink!!

A trip to the hairdresser is guaranteed to raise your spirits - enjoy!

Not frivolous at all. Nothing wrong with doing something for yourself.

I love the tonic of a visit to the hairdressers after a session in hospital. 💇‍♀️

My hair was in a terrible state when I was first diagnosed probably all the medication ... now restored however I am going grey instead!

I read about a woman who got a stroke from leaning back at hairdressers. I always raise the sink as high as I can and put towels as well to be on the safe side.

Go for it!!

I made the mistake of colouring my roots myself. Got hair dye all over the the newly laid and very expensive 'lino'.

Hair washing is such a short activity. Scalp massage, which my hairdresser does, really calms you down.

Go and look gorgeous!! xxx

Thank you Handel 😊x Sorry, but I did have a bit of a giggle about your do it yourself disaster! Not really funny I know

Hiya. I fell about the floor laughing myself!!! Puts things in perspective though doesn't it. The floor was a rather nice burgundy brown with lino highlights!!

All the very best in your recovery xxxx

Hi, It’s not a frivolous question, it’s about a quality of life post heart attack.

I am now 8 weeks since heart attack and stent fitted. By 5 weeks my hair was a wreck so I got my hairdresser to come to the house to cut my hair then next day coloured it myself and rinsed it off in the shower. I was certainly a bit wobbly, slightly worried about collapsing and being taken to A&E with hair dye not washed out but pleased I had achieved it and felt much better that I didn’t look such a wreck.

I am now on Warfarin and I’m losing hair and it’s not that thick to start with. Anyone got any suggestions,, don’t say a wig please!

Absolutely! I had my HA and 3 stents and was having my foils and colour done within the week and I felt so much better for doing it, a bit of pampering works wonders. I was also on Ticagrelor, Atorvastatin, Bisoprolol, Pregabalin and Aspirin with no adverse reactions. So go ahead and enjoy!

I had to have a Doppler ultrasound of my leg veins a few years ago, and the lady that performed it, told me she hadn't had her hair washed at the hairdresser's since she suffered a mini stroke as a result!

You’ve asked such a relevant question, it made me laugh cause I thought exactly the same. I was due for my tint regrowth when I had my HA so you can imagine what I looked like after 14 days, that’s when I went. I was anxious during naturally but so happy I went, felt like I had a little of the old me back.
