Is it an assessment for the use of piped in oxygen in the house, i.e. 16 hours per day not portable canisters for when you go out. If it is for the house they take a blood sample for your blood gasses. My husband went last week just before Christmas and he is having to go back in two weeks for another test as he was borderline so he will have another blood sample taken and tested and if it has dropped he will be having a couple of concentrators in the house, i.e. plugged into the electricity mains.

My assessment was by a respiratory nurse. Besides the blood gas test she also asked me to walk around in the house for a very short period then took blood gases again. She then told me I need 4 litres / min when sitting and in bed and 8 litres/min when active ie walking around etc. I have one concentrator on mains in the house which is restricted to 8 litres/min max and I have 8 portable bottles for when I go out.

What usually happens is that your oxygen saturation is checked at rest and when walking. If your sats drop below 88 you will be given oxygen and your sats taken again when walking. If they are not satisfactory then maybe a higher rate of oxygen will be tried, whilst your sats are tested again. This is to find the correct level for you. This can then result in a home oxygen order (HOOF) for a concentrator and/or portable cylinders for a recommended amount of time each day or night. Some people only use it overnight, others only when active. Some use it for 15 or 16 hours a day and others 24/7. Your level will be determined by the test. Good luck.

Exactly what auntymary said, but do be prepared to be at the hospital / wherever for some time. My bloods were taken at rest, was then put on oxygen at 1 l/m for one hour and bloods redone; obviously not good enough, as put on 2 l/m for another hour and then bloods redone; this carries on until they are satisfied that they have the right level for you.

Nothing of the above happened to my husband. When he went for the oxygen assessment to see if he needs piped in oxygen at home, his blood was taken, they took it away for testing that was all they did, no walking about, no oxygen whatsoever, just a straight forward blood test he did not even have to stand up. This was done in the Respiratory clinic in the hospital.

For his oxygen cylinders for when he walks about at the moment, the physio came to the house and put the oximeter on his finger and because his oxygen sats were under 88 at rest and way under 88 when walking about she prescribed oxygen. It was all so simple.

Hospitals must have different ways of doing things.

My assessment was done in hospital, on 3 ltrs sitting and moving about. That was two years ago, you soon learn to live with it so don't worry. Cannot tell you anymore than has already been said.
