Did any of your close relatives (i.e. your mother or sister) also suffer from pre-eclampsia?

No one else in my family ever suffered from pre eclampsia although i do worry that it will effect my daughter when she has children.

My eldest daughter never developed pre eclampsia with any 3 of her pregnancies. However with her 1st she had the terrible itching that I also had with her. Apprantly it's something in the liver. All the best to you and your daughter.

My mum's mother had pre-eclampsia with her and died shortly after she had my mum. My mum had pre-eclampsia with both myself and my brother but worse when she had me. Apparently she remembers being left in the theatre for 24 hours wrapped in tin foil! It's strange what you remember! I had pre-eclampsia just last year when i had my baby girl. It was fairly well controlled til I was induced then I had failed intubation during my c section with general anaesthetic (due to the swelling in my body) and then eclamptic siezure while in recovery. My mum didn't siezure when she had me but she was given some very strong drugs (valium I think). My consultant told me there's a very strong chance I'd get pre-eclampsia again and that my daughter has a strong chance also.

My mother who was sedated from 32 weeks and had me at 36 weighing 3lb 10. Her sister in whom it wasn't spotted. I had my son at 31 weeks (placental abruption) weighing 2lb 15 having been first admitted at 28 weeks - am worried for my daughter (now 7 years old) as it seems to be getting earlier generation by generation.

I suspect that my grandmother (mother's mother) had pre-eclampsia - although this was many years ago and I don't think it was recognised as such then. But she died in childbirth after suffering a stroke, so it seems likely that it was caused by pre-eclampsia. Seems to have then missed a generation - my mum was fine.

Just found out that a cousin of mine had pre-eclampsia with her first baby but a lot later on into the pregnancy than me.

My mother had it with all three of us and it started between 32 and 37 weeks. I had it with my first very severely at 37 weeks following/causing an abruption but not with my second who was born at 40+5 weeks.

I'm the first in my family too, and have 2 girls so am worried about them in the future. My dad has had very high BP for as long as I can remember and my brother now suffers too so maybe I am predisposed to have high Bp too?

Dear Sara, How is your BP usually? Was it normal before your pregnancies and afterward? Are you on any medication for high blood pressure? If you have a family history of high BP you are more likely to have it but not necessarily. The blood pressure association have a good website answering questions about BP generally. If you want more information please do email me on info@apec.org.uk Kind regards, Ann Marie at APEC

I am the first known person in the family who had it but my grandmother thinks she probably did as well. But back then home births were normal and it was never picked up on. I have had it twice now, the second time being worse. The first at 33 +1 and the second at 32 + 6. Seems my body cannot go beyond this point. My sister has been told she must mention my history if she ever has children.

Dear benburgern, Please make sure she does as family history/connection is one of the recognised risk factors. She should therefore also be started on low dose Aspirin at 12 weeks of pregnancy. Kind regards Ann Marie

Yes my grandmother (my Dad's mum) had it and was told it was too dangerous to have any more children - hence why my Dad is an only child.

My mum had it with me but not my sister, I had it in both my pregnancies, my sister as yet has no children. X

In addition to my response earlier where my mum and her sister also had pre-eclampsia I forgot to mention that my mum's sister's daughter (ie my cousin maternally) also had pre-eclampsia and bizarely had her baby at 31 weeks 1 day (exactly the same as me!)

After me having two pre-eclampsia births my Mum said she had never heard of pre-eclampsia but she said she had Toxemia which we now know to be pre-eclampsia.

she had five children altogether but only had pre-eclampsia with her twin birth with my brother, sadly only he survived. x

My mother had always told me that her bloody pressure went really high during my birth and that 'without modern medicine we both might have died'. She never said the word Preeclampsia, so I didn't think she'd had it (she died 2 years before I gave birth, so she could never tell me for sure whether that's what she'd had). Then, not so long ago, her best friend sent me a whole load of my mum's letters to her, and it was clear while reading one of them, that she had had preeclampsia (she mentioned that she had been on drugs to prevent seizures). Perhaps they didn't name it as such in the 70s? My first child's a boy, and I hope the second might be too... I wouldn't want any daughter of mine to go through what I did!
