intraocular bleed on Apixaban

I had a posterior vitreous detachment in my eye a few weeks ago. This is very common when you get older and is not usually dangerous. I already had this once, but this was before my Afib diagnosis and Apixaban.

This time I was told by the ophthalmologist that I had had three minor bleeds and in fact I continued to have them for awhile, but had some trouble getting an appointment without going through A&E again. My optician has now referred me back to the eye casualty and I have an appointment tomorrow.

The optician suggested I contact my GP (anything else I could do while I am accomplishing this - stop the rain or broker world peace perhaps 🤣) to see if I need to be on a lower dosage of Apixaban.

I can see that being a possibility.

Has anyone else had similar experiences and if so, what happened?

Had the gel movement several times over the last fifteen years or so (now 78) but no bleeding I know of and I have the retinal scan and photo every time I have my eyes tested. Been on warfarin for about 19 years now.

Hi,

I agree with BobD ( but then I've been on Warfarin for 13 years, 14 in January). However, that aside, have you checked on NHS or NICE website about side effects of Apixaban ?

To be or not to be on thinners is a risk/reward analysis. With your eye issue, you want to revisit that analysis with input from both your eye doctor and cardiologist. Options might include continuing as now, reducing dose, changing to a different AC, stopping AC's, getting your LAA occluded.
