Following from the prime minister's broadcast last night, my son had a text from "NHS England" this morning inviting him for his booster injection. Only thing was they wanted him to pay £4.99 for it.

These unspeakable toe rags need hanging by their unmentionables as sooner or later some elderly or not quite so switched on people will find their bank accounts emptied by this scam.

You have been warned. They are out there.

Thanks. These morons are into everything. Every day you hear of a new scam. Do they ever catch these people? Something needs to be done to stop this. All you hear about is a new scam - not what they are doing about it. When are we going to get some law and order here? This is telephone mugging much worse than street mugging when they only steal what is on your person. Someone needs to get up a petition. I wish I was younger!!!!!

Keeo your wits about you everyone. Never give bank details over the phone.

Nothing can be done if not reported.

There has been much bad publicity that crimes are reported and nothing is done. I personally have had that experience. Surely there is enough publicity in the media concerning this issue for some action to be taken. The trouble is no one cares.

CDreamer profile image
CDreamer in reply to Cavalierrubie

That’s not my experience. As Bob says fraud is so sophisticated, specialized and international that the emphasis is more towards education and intercepting the scams or shutting them down at source.

Fraud Alert do an excellent job - hence report to them. The regular police won’t have the training or resources of how to bring a case to court

The problem is not that people don’t care, it’s more that they haven’t the resources & the infrastructure to be able to successfully prosecute.

Hi there, we had guests staying with us this summer (I run a little Bn’B). He is a Met police officer in the fraud squad. Apparently when the terror alerts go up or when there is a wave of violent gun or knife crime, his department is just about emptied of officers into the violent crime units. So basically, they are understaffed. He also said that a lot of this cyber crime was highly organised by a couple of large none western countries!

Frightening world these days.

CDreamer profile image
CDreamer in reply to Maggimunro

I also have a relation in the police who transferred to fraud and catching and prosecution is not mostly possible so the emphasis is now on education & prevention. Reporting is so important because if a text - your mobile provider can block fraudulent texts - but only when the numbers are reported and known about.

Cavalierrubie profile image

I disagree with your reply. What is your experience?

Things are much more sofisticated than when I was investigating fraud 25 years ago and sadly much of it originates in other parts of the world where UK police have no way of dealing.

I've heard of this scam before. I get them all the time with one thing or another - the bank ones are the best ie your account has been frozen by Lloyds etc. I don't have a Lloyds account.

If in doubt NEVER give any details over the phone - ask for it in writing. Also scammers will ask you to hang up and ring the number on your bank card. They keep the line open and you think it's real.

Always ask for it in writing. The same applies for your 'tax refund' etc.

True story - I nearly caught one out. It was the you have won 6 million on a lottery one. I played him for all it worth and nearly got him to pay me £20 so I could afford to send him the cash by WU - another story another day. It was fun though. Done a few like that and really wind them up.

The best one (kept him going for weeks) is again another story another day. Not afib related so I'll say no more.

One of the best tips I got from a Fraud Alert webinar was IF you answer your landline - which we tend not to unless you are in our contact lit’s - don’t speak wait until the caller speaks, if they do. If it’s a fraud call or marketing call silence will see them off & the line goes dead because the technology is triggered by human voice. Try it - it works.

I do that too CD. We were plagued by scam calls on our landline - until we blocked international calls with BT and have peace since then.

Well done ! Paul, To contrary your story would be entertaining and distracting , amusing . (Best thing for afib ) on google news today , shocking article about the biggest organisation in the world that does these very scams . From N….a. I will post link later. Have cleaned out $3 m from bank ac . It’s one crime org. Reporting to Police is the very best action. Link?

So disgusting but unfortunately it seems like a way of life now. Wonder if some people have always been so vile and nasty or whether it's just with all the technology and media, that we just hear more about it these days. Seems a sad world to be leaving for our kids and grandkids. Thanks for the heads up.

We succumbed to a "parcel"scam recently though we cottoned on in time to cancel our bank card. I had ordered something off Amazon that was coming from China . We got an sms to my husband's mobile saying custom's duty needed paying. He clicked on the link and we think that this enabled them access to our email so they could actually find an order- the sms was just "phishing" because at this time of year more people are going to be getting stuff online. The amount of customs duty was about 9€.Had my husband bothered to tell me about this before trying to deal with it I would have queried it as the item only cost €4,99! But then they made a mistake by getting greedy and the amount for paying was changed to €90. Some people might not have noticed this and completed the transaction. But this alerted him so he got the card cancelled. I then put in a search and found out it is a common scam here at the moment and originates in Russia.

I had a scam alert saying my card had been used in St Petersburg and to enter some details to cancel the card. They have scams about scams now!

Don’t buy from China for multiple reasons. I bought from one Co , with UK address. Then it said 3 weeks to arrive. I realised ‘drop shipping ‘. ( They take payment thrn the item is ordered and sent from China . It is illegal as not shipped from UK - LIE . There was a phone number , I called it , Danish person in Denmark, using UK ADDRESS ON WEBSITE. Drop shipping from China to Denmark thrn post to UK . Item was £17. I told the man it was a lie , not UK drop shipping from China , that I would do internet reviews and tell their lies. He refunded to my card . I am going to post on internet reviews . I did check the web reviews first, but only 2 good ones . (I think they revive reviews somehow ) I only use Amazon . No misery , full refunds.

I live in Florida known as the scam capital of the USA because so many elderly live here. There was a scam going on here to do with the shots months ago. The landline phone rings several times a day and the majority of rings are scams. Any thing and everything to try to get people to give money. Does no good to report it. The perpetrators always find a way around it. Here when you answer the phone if you wait a second you'll here a funny sound like a blip or something and you know it's a scammer and just hang up. It's terrible how many elderly who live in Florida have lost their savings to these crooks. And now to take advantage of people during these hard times is unconscionable. It seems like it has become a world wide problem. Be vigilant.

Every take care and be safe.

So infuriating... I've come to deal with them by giving them as little to hook into as possible... i.e., I pick-up the phone and then mute that line to tie up their phone as long as possible. I don't antagonize them anymore after a call one time where it was clear they knew where I lived. I can't find them, but they can find me... not a good situation

belindalore profile image
belindalore in reply to PrinzMongo

Someone told me that one scam caller, the robot callers, can call several phone numbers at the same time. So that way I guess they know someone will answer. It's a racket for sure. USA used to have an 800 number you called and registered your landline number so you weren't supposed to get scam calls. Once the robot callers started I think that 800 number is useless. Now we get calls on our cellphones. Thanks to the companies who sell our info to other companies. All we can do is hang up on them. 😡

Take care and be safe. As if we didn't have enough to deal with, with all our illnesses.

Our healthcare system (insurance companies) here in the USA is starting to cut down on what they will pay for a patients care. This has started with the pandemic. With the virus you get the shots and testing free. But not hospital. My neighbor broke her hip a few months ago. She lives alone. She's lower income like me and also has HMO insurance. HMO's pay for the bills pretty good but if you need at home care. Nope. They don't pay anything for that. She had to ask one of her church ladies to come stay with her. She is getting at home therapy but has to pay for it herself. $25 an hour. Now for some that may not sound like a lot but when you're low income it is a whole lot. Now she did spend a short while in a facility for therapy after the hospital. But those places tend to discharge people too soon. They keep you until the amount the insurance companies pay runs out. Then they magically deem you fit to go home. But thank goodness my neighbor is getting better. She was able to drive her car for the first time in months. Yay!

Now our President wants to cut back on funding the government gives the hospitals. If that happens patients will be discharged even earlier than they should be. I'm so discouraged by the USA healthcare system. It's really gone to the devil. It is profit over patient. People here are now having to pay more for everything and when you're low income it's not easy. Meds are very expensive here. I know many people like in the UK pay their whole working lives to get healthcare. We do the same with Medicare. But the difference is you in the UK really do get your care free and your meds free. If I'm wrong, I apologize. I'm going by what I see people saying in the forum. But we still have to pay something somewhere to have Medicare. And if you can afford the better insurance on Medicare, you will pay for supplemental insurance which can cost several hundred dollars. Those are the ones who get to see any Dr they want. I really get the feeling that us older people are just in the way. Especially if you can't afford the better insurance. And I'm certainly not alone in that feeling.😞

You only get free medications in England, if you are over 60 or claiming certain benefits. The government are considering changing it to 65years old.

belindalore profile image
belindalore in reply to Sixtychick

Sounds like the USA as far pushing up the age. People here pay different prices for their meds depending on what insurance you have. Some pay very little or nothing if they are on Medicaid (insurance for the very poor, but even some can't get Medicaid). The healthcare system here in the USA needs a major overhaul. Take care and be safe.

That may apply to over the counter prescription but any drugs or medicine given in hospital or emergency situations is free. Similarly if you are long term on a particular drug you can get annual discount cards and things like incontinence aids are VAT free.
