Please help. cardiac and kidney

I just got out of the hospital. My afib went crazy.

BUT, my real problem is my friend. She was also in the hospital at the same time as me. I just found out. She has heart attack and kidney failure. Last month she had 5 strokes, doctors said.

I need to get help on what food I can prepare for her (and me). She cannot have salt.

Can anyone give me ideas on what I can make for us and how to flavor the food?

Thank you in advance!

Hi DesertDeuces - so sorry to hear about your problems. If you are looking for advice regarding recipes you may find you will get a good response on the Healthy Eating forum. I know several members of that forum who post there but you might also look to one of the kidney forums or web-sites.

Personally I use a lot of herbs and spices to flavour food but for something as specific as a diet for kidney dysfunction you do need specialised advice.

Best wishes.

If she has kidney failure she should have access through her hospital clinic to a renal dietician, she should ask to be referred if not, they are the best ones to advise on diet and they can prescribe any extra nutritional support like drinks and soups that she might need. It's not just salt she will have to limit, there are a lot of things to cut out, limit or keep in the right balance, not easy doing it without help, the dieticians will supply charts, meal plans and recipes.

My late husband had kidney failure and was on dialysis, the dieticians were so important and a great help.

Great point. I found the National Kidney Foundation that has the DASH Diet. Looks goood. I have lemon and mild chili pepper stuff that has no salt that they say can help flavor foods.Thank you

I forgot to ask her husband to let me see her hospital discharge docu, ments which should have nutritional guidelines.Thank you!

Hi! It is not an answer to your question, but to one of your posts from the past, regarding the vision. Try to find in the Net "Cambridge Institute for Better Vision". Maybe you find some help regarding your eyes... All the best!

Hooray! I was able to prepare food for my friend and it came out wonderful!!I had asked her husband to let me see the hospital discharge papers to read what the doctors wanted his wife to eat. He was no help. He's been feeding her broccoli and not much else, I found out.

Yesterday, for the first time, I made chicken stock. It came out wonderful! And, according to America's Test Kitchen video on it, the strained out meat would be too dry to use. But, not only did the stock come out great, the meat was very moist and tender. I used it to make a very nice chicken salad with vegan mayonnaise, celery and dill weed. My friend loved the sandwiches I made her, which I topped off with slices of tomatoes and lettuce. I placed the sandwiches in a to-go container I bought for her and added an additional tomato slice with a bit of celery and a tangerine. Very nice and tasty meal.

And, I had a little bit of chicken salad left over, so I cooked up some pasta and mixed it in the chicken salad. Yet another meal from it!! It was very tasty.

Then, to top it all off, I put 4 cups of stock, 1 can of petite diced tomatoes (no salt), diced celery, cauliflower, broccoli and basmati rice on the stove. I seasoned the soup with dill weed and juice of 1 lemon. It made my tummy sing! I added a little parmesan to my bowl of soup.

Just wanted to let you all know that I found a way to help my friend. She's now stocked up with food for the week. No more living on just broccoli for her.

Thanks all for the replies. I hope you try the above recipes. You'll love 'em.
